In a landmark decision by the educational authorities in Birkina Faso, all Primary and secondary school learner would from henceforth be taught the Haitian revolution , and other empowering black history. African children will no longer be taught about French explorer or the nonsense of how they came to Africa to civilised the uncivilised black people. As stated earlier, Burkina Faso has officially incorporated the Haitian Revolution into its secondary-school history curriculum. The change forms part of a broader government overhaul of history, geography, and civic education programs aimed at reducing colonial-era narratives and elevating African and national perspectives. Under the revised curriculum, students in 4ème will study a new lesson titled “The Haitian Revolution.” It examines the movements of the Haitian people in their struggle for liberation from slavery and French colonial rule, their successes, including the achievement of independence in 1804, and the mistakes and challenges of the revolutionary process. The reform also introduces other new content across grade levels. In 6ème, students now study “the concept of revolution.” In 5ème, new lessons cover “African knowledge and skills” and “Burkinabè revolutions,” addressing the Democratic and Popular Revolution of Thomas Sankara (1983–1987) and the Progressive Popular Revolution under the current government of Captain Ibrahim Traoré. The Ministry of Secondary Education, describe the changes as an effort to “decolonize” textbooks and teaching materials. While full textbook rewrites remain underway, educators are already applying updated language and content. Reported changes include replacing terms such as “colonizer” with “invader” and “explorer” with “spy,” removing or revising language officials view as demeaning, and adding chapters on topics including the Confederation of Sahel States and what authorities describe as the predation of Burkina Faso’s natural resources by the West. The government states that the reforms are intended to challenge colonial narratives, strengthen national identity, and give greater weight to African history, resistance, and experiences. In an interview with the press broadcast at the end of September, President Ibrahim Traoré urged Burkinabè to “read the history of Haiti and understand that you shouldn’t play games with these people,” referring to former colonial powers.
