SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

Arday's (and his allies') rhetorical response is straight out of the Trump playbook. Clearly their goals are not aligned, but their tactics are. This strategy unfolds in three acts: Act 1: try to distract the public from legitimate questions Act 2: try to flip attention to the accusers Act 3: whip co-partisans into a frenzy ___________ Act 1: distract from legitimate questions In this step, you flood the world with misinformation. You put so many fantastical claims into the ether that it becomes impossible to dispute them all. (This is basically Brandolini's Law in action.) You reinforce your position by changing the subject. Move the conversation to process, to fairness, to tone policing. Anything else will do, really; you want attention to be anywhere but the specific, checkable, documented claims. Put a bow on this step by alleging a vast conspiracy. Instead of "fake news", call it a "coordinated campaign to unseat [you]." Act 2: turn it on the accusers. Focus on accusers' motives rather than on the content of their claims. The charge is never false; it's malicious. Team Trump calls it a "witch hunt." Team Arday calls it a "lynch mob." The words are different, but the strategy is the same. In this act, take a firm position that you are an oracle. You and only you--or, ok, maybe a few in-group members--are able to see through noise in a way that no one else can. Your piercing gaze cuts right through all the riffraff. You are a sage; others are ignoramuses. In this step, it is vital to discredit the institutional referees... but only to a point. Journalists, universities, and investigative bodies are deeply flawed ... unless it's convenient for them to suddenly not be so. When they investigate you and find that you have erred, they are deeply flawed. When they investigate you and find no errors, they are the arbiters of fairness and justice. Act 3: whip co-partisans into a frenzy Cast yourself as the persecuted, so the story becomes what's being done to you rather than what you did. Lead with narratives rather than rebuttals. After all, a story doesn't have to survive a fact-check the way a point-by-point does. Never, and I mean never, focus on the victims of your actions. All of your acts are victimless crimes. You are the true victim. Hence, a specific claim about your specific actions becomes an attack on an entire community. Defending yourself and defending your community collapse into the same act. Supporters are no longer being asked to weigh evidence. They're being asked to prove loyalty. What began as a narrow, answerable question about your conduct becomes a symbolic fight over ideology.

I often think about the technical limitations that game designers of the 80s had to work with - both in terms of software and hardware. The game that stands at the very top is Elite. Think about this for a second: The core game code on the BBC Micro version occupied roughly 22 KB of memory. Now think about what Braben and Bell turned that into: a universe with eight galaxies, each containing 256 star systems (for a total of 2,048 planets/systems). Each system featured unique details: government type, economy, technology level, population, commodity prices, and even descriptive text (e.g., a planet known for "carnivorous arts graduates" or similar quirky combinations). If you still need a bit more help to contextualize that, try this: Elite was smaller than many modern text files or desktop icons, yet it contained (and let you freely explore) a multi-galaxy-spanning universe that felt vast and limitless. Oh, and by the way, the game also rendered 3D wireframe ships, stations, and planets in real time on a 2 MHz 6502 processor. This is no slight on today’s game designers. They work with what they have, and that's okay. But when you think about the worlds that some programmers created with the tools they were given, it sometimes breaks my brain trying to understand how they did it. Elite is a true masterpiece on so many levels. I played the C64 version back in the day, and even 40+ years later it still feels like one of the most incredible programming wonders ever.
