Within hours of landing in the US from Bombay, my sore throat eased. The mild headache, coughing and sneezing disappeared. It made me wonder: how much discomfort have we simply accepted as normal? We check AQI like we check the weather. Except this is the air our children are breathing. Where is the urgency? Why isn’t this treated as a public health emergency? The privileged can buy air purifiers. What does the person selling flowers at a traffic signal do? The construction worker? The child walking to school? “Stay indoors” is advice only some can afford to follow. Clean air. Clean water. Good roads. These are the bare minimum citizens should be able to expect.
