Installing the winter study sensor today. These sensors will measure oxygen, carbon dioxide, moisture, sunlight, and soil temperature. The data compiled will help us all learn more about winter injury. @UMNTurf @erictwatkins @mdacostaUMASS @Cornell_Turf @GCSAA @CAGCS1929 @MetGCSA – at Greenwich, CT

Let’s be a bit cautious.
AI Foundation models in ag *could* be revolutionary.
They could also be extremely bad, providing reasonable-looking but wrong and unverifiable predictions.
Slow and steady wins the race.

Working on a chapter on Plant Cognition for my book "Liquid brains". Germination is one of the most exciting phenomena, which involves decision-making and dealing with future uncertainties. Overwhelmed by the diversity of seeds, biological time capsules that compute their worlds.

Finally got the sensors in the ground for the 2022/23 winter kill study! Looking forward to seeing all the data in the coming years. @UMNTurf Thank you again to @erictwatkins and his team for this opportunity to participate!
My wife and I welcomed Ada Elizabeth into our family this morning. Everyone’s tired but healthy and well. Very thankful.

To measure change in soil #carbon: sample T-zero vs ~5yrs, right? Or use space-for-time design?
Turns out there’s a problem w that..

My question with testing techniques is always "does this improve my overall productivity". I've found that pure write-the-test-first TDD doesn't do that so I mostly avoid it
Bundling tests in the same commit as the implementation DOES help my productivity simonwillison.net/2022/Oct/2…

Lots of conversation lately on the impacts of tree leaf mulching on lawns. As part of our @USDA funded #WinterTurf project we’ll be investigating how tree leaf mulching impacts turfgrass soil health and potential snow mold development. Collaborating with @MSUTurf on the project.
Every fall, Americans send about 8 million tons of bagged leaves to landfills.
But you don't have to. Keep leaf litter on the ground — it fertilizes the soil and gives shelter to small wildlife.
