When you come from Belville, red carpet affairs are few and far between. Dirk Lubbe jumped at the opportunity and strutted his stuff like a supermodel.
Belville AC had a big contingent at the #HangklipMarathon. Everyone tells you “Come to Belville and CY” but it you run in
(vagabond) Chenin Blanc, Rosa Rabbedoe (tomboy / wild, mischievous girl) Rosé, Sarel Seemonster (sea monster) Sauvignon Blanc, Zak Skobbejak (scoundrel) Shiraz, Kaptein Karnuffel (rough-and-tumble fellow) Cabernet Sauvignon and Ben Bullebak (big brute) Merlot. The latter of which
is recommended to go with “rugby, braai en min slaai.”
Bringing it back to Bellville and piracy, if Dirk was given a pirate name, I have no doubt it would be “Land” Lubbe.

After spending too much time at the last water table, I had to run hard over the final 2km to make my 4h36 goal time. However, the brakes were applied and I came to a screeching halt on spotting this impromptu shooter table.
There was a wide arsenal on offer so I asked for a
recommendation. A “Fireball” was recommended and accepted, resulting in a deep-seated cinnamon burning in my belly for the rest of the race.
However, this is much more pleasant than the fireballs one experiences after cutting chillies, not washing one’s hands and then going for a
wee. Melodramatic, romantic novelists know nothing about what a true burning in the loins feels like…

Game Reserve certainly lives up to its name: Four kilometres of strenuous climbing on an unforgiving gravel track that is only accessible to 4Ă—4 vehicles (and hardy runners). The view over Komani from the top is truly spectacular and well worth the calories burnt to get there.

Looking ahead to November marathons – my “must do” marathon in the Eastern Cape is the little known Bonkolo Marathon in Komani (formerly Queenstown).
The marathon comprises two long out-and-back sections with a few loops thrown into the middle portion of the race, over a course
that explores Komani and the exquisite surrounding Eastern Cape countryside combining dirt and tar road running. The race takes its name from the Bonkolo Dam that features as the start and finish of the race. Be warned that there is a vicious off-road section during the mid-20s.
UPDATE: Quick update on the Cedric the Skelm article. A case of fraud (#52/10/2026) has been opened against Cedric van Wyk by Tony Abrahams. The wheels of justice turn slowly in South Africa but I’ll be keeping an eye on developments.

You should be worried when you are diverted up a road called “High Level”… but you don’t get the views without the hills – and there were some great views at the top.
It was also great to see so many up country license plates along the Kleinmond coastline. #HangklipMarathon.
The Western Cape is blessed with the best marathons in the world. #HangklipMarathon is another to add to your bucket list. Marathon #319 (Unique #195) & lovely to participate in inaugural edition. Nine people ran 4:36 today. I can confirm that I was one of them.

Managed to keep my perfect winning record at club quiz nights before a marathon (even without the assistance of @RefJK). With one of our team members under 18, I scored an extra bottle of See Rowers wine – they are doing the last table at the tomorrow’s Hangklip Marathon so may
well do some tasting. Hopefully this doesn’t prevent me from hitting my goal time of 4:36.
Thanks Hangklip AC for a lovely evening and the opportunity to be your half time entertainment.

Here’s a highlights reel from the inaugural #FancourtMarathon in George. A circular route full of rolling hills and great scenery with 631m of elevation gain. A great new addition to the bouquet of Garden Route marathons and one to look out for next year.
