Even 20 years into radiology and medical education, the doubt still surfaces. Imposter syndrome never left me. The difference now is knowing that no one has it all figured out. If you’re willing to learn and adapt with humility, you belong in medicine.

The clear answer to the medical student research debate is to simply limit the number of publications a medical student can disclose on their residency application to their 3-5 most impactful research projects.
This would encourage medical students to try their hand at research, which I think is a valuable skill for someone in a scientific field, while not incentivizing the research arms race we are currently seeing in residency applications. If anything, it would incentivize medical students to be selective about their research and go for more meaningful projects.
Medical students who love research could always do more, but there wouldn’t be the same benefit to gaming the system and getting your name on as many publications as possible.
Limiting the number of publications on the application to 3-5 would also allow application reviewers to look more carefully and critically at each research project. Application reviewers simply do not have the time to examine 20 research projects per applicant, so limiting applicants to 3-5 would allow reviewers to focus on the substance of the projects rather than simply noting the number of publications.

I spy @UMMCRads Alyson Carraway, APD for the DR Residency, narrating this podcast on the important topic of the radiology readout! 🌟
🚨 A new episode of the @RadioGraphics podcast is now available!🚨 Great radiology education starts at the readout. Learn how patient-centered discussions and strong teaching culture transform training and care. bit.ly/48rn2sx

Radiology in 2026: we can detect a 2 mm incidental lesion from space, but the indication is still “?.”

Answer: COVID-19 pneumonia 🦠
Classic pattern:
✨ bilateral peripheral ground-glass
✨ +/- crazy paving
✨ lower lobe predominance
2021 radiology really had us diagnosing a pandemic one CT at a time 😅

🔬Pathology is still giving main character energy in medical school…
but imaging is running the hospital 🩻
Time for a curriculum plot twist 👇
#Radres #Medtwitter #Radiology
🦠Med school still teaching disease like it’s 1950: microscope first, imaging later.
🩻Meanwhile… clinical medicine in 2026 = CT, MRI, US driving decisions in real time.
🥼We’re training doctors to recognize 🔬pathology slides they’ll never see—and undertraining them in the images they’ll use every single day.
🚨 Education gap = patient care gap.
