my hot You Can See Everything take: people are making a mistake by filtering their understanding of the film only through the lens of Fielder's work, when in fact it was Oppenheim who initiated the project and had the most clear influence over its style

ftr the average age at marriage in Elizabethan England was mid-20s. Shakespeare’s audience would also feel R+J were unusually young for the stakes of the play. But “they’re stupid teenagers” isn’t analysis - it’s barely an observation. You still have to engage with the text.
I got detention my freshman year because I made a joke during Lit class that I’d be dead too if I eloped at 13 with a 18 year old. My teacher 1st argued and said she was 14 and then I found the exact part where it says “nearing her 14th bday” and THEN I was being disruptive 😭🤣

besides the point but 5’3” is the worst height to be as a woman bc it’s short enough that the objects around you (clothes, furniture, architecture, etc.) are clearly not designed for you, but if you complain about it, some woman who is 4’11” will Invalidate Your Lived Experience.
i don’t know how to say this succinctly but petite has become co-opted by normal height skinny people when it originally meant anyone under like 5’3” regardless of size and it’s made shopping impossible

I don’t really care if Elizabeth Holmes felt sad when she saw Amanda Seyfried’s portrayal of her
I think Nathan Fielder did a really good job with You Can See Everything. Especially in showing how unwilling Amanda Seyfried was to acknowledge her own role in potentially harming another person. He had everyone looking at one another and questioning everyone else’s intentions, while seemingly being completely unwilling to examine their own behavior. I thought Amanda’s resistance to doing that was especially revealing I also obviously think Billy is terrible. I think he’s cruel and exploitative. I’ve seen Elizabeth’s tweets for years and thought they were her. Finding out they’re his was jarring and sad. But as much as I dislike Billy, I think he made a very good point. Why would he care what Amanda thinks? She’s an actress who has profited from portraying his wife as a bizarre and dishonest and manipulative freak to an audience that is largely voyeuristic, incredibly binary in their moral thinking, and seemingly unable to separate fiction from reality I don’t think that Amanda needed to defend Elizabeth or excuse anything she’s done but I do think it’s bizarre how unwilling she seemed to consider that she might have contributed to another person’s suffering

Arguably the most famous doc of all time is a propaganda piece for Nazi Germany commissioned by Hitler himself. Ironically, YCSE riffs on vérité filmmaking, which in turn riffs on soviet kino-pravda, but doc filmmaking developed heavily through propaganda, even fascist propaganda
Replying to @AkilahObviously
I cannot articulate why it feels fascist to destroy the art of documentary filmmaking. Another institution that kinda wasn’t a problem. Partially think it should’ve been a reality show??

The documentary trusts people to be smart enough to tell that she’s deliberately “smol bean”ing herself (unfortunately some viewers did not clear that hurdle). The second half only works if you’ve already caught that she’s exceptionally good at weaponizing paternalism.
the annoying thing about the whole metaphysical “did Elizabeth Holmes knowingly lie or does she understand things differently” discourse is that it is a matter of public record that she just literally faked financial statements, altered documents, etc

Lance to Nathan after he’s been filming w/ Elizabeth Holmes for 16 hours per day:
Lance Oppenheim told me a little about the cognitive dissonance of making YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING with Nathan Fielder

one of the many fascinating things to me about you can see everything is that I keep seeing people try to explain holmes' behaviors and responses as the result of autism when to me it seems so very clear how just flatly manipulative she is

I loved Digger as an exploration of the limits of art to change the world, but I found its climate change messaging dull and obvious. The “you’re all complicit”speech falls apart when you remember he’s only giving it bc he concealed info abt an impending mass casualty event.
It’s wild how quickly the tide has turned on everyone embracing #Digger! here’s my review from Saturday, when most critics were still panning it🪏 "Iñárritu is offering [the audience] not only an experimental, visually stunning, and dazzlingly unexpected work of art—but also a sophisticated level of respect in assuming that they can (and will) come along for the ride”

A "thorough investigation and follow-through from authorities" is a pipe dream, and Matt Murray might have known that if he hadn't laid off the bulk of The Post's international desk.

Jesus. This new SDNY indictment charges a 19-year-old man with plying two college girls with fentanyl, then raping one of them who wound up dying. Currently unclear on which Manhattan college campus this happened.

I suspect the issue lies with giving these kinds of long-winded, confusing answers when someone asks whether the bird is for sale.

let the record reflect that I was Right about this from the JUMP.
having been to the store, this feels likely. They give very mixed messages on whether it’s merchandise or strictly decor. I don’t think they intended to be rude but I do low key suspect they don’t actually want ppl ordering copies of the bird. They really talked up its rarity.

also fwiw this bit about “serious interest” does betray that they’re making some kind of judgment about which customers are worth taking seriously enough to provide a certain service, and for whatever reason they decided that KC wasn’t one of those people.

ugh I know this is a Joke but Italian Americans were massively important to the development of labor unions in the U.S. The largest lynching in U.S. history was of Italian American trade unionists (and their murder was one of the driving forces behind Columbus Day).
The problem with this strategy is that it's hard to swap out Columbus with anyone else, because so few Italian-Americans have actually made positive contributions to this country

Fully support the Kelly Clarkson beef with that store in Brooklyn. People forget celebrities used to log on here and type crazy shit all the time. Also this is the greatest exposure for that store in the world, they’re gonna be fine lol
