BREAKING: The Houthis have now effectively introduced an email-based clearance system for ships crossing the Red Sea, requiring shipping companies to declare they have no links to the U.S., U.K., Israel or Saudi Arabia, per a review of the emails by The Wall Street Journal.
Operators send vessel details to the Houthis’ Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center (HOCC) and typically receive clearance within 24 hours, valid for around seven days, provided AIS and VHF remain switched on.
With rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope adding significant costs and delays, some shipping companies are apparently opting for the email route. The Houthis says the service is free and deny charging transit fees.
