2 huge moves this week by Australia with global impact on climate and EVs. 🦘🧵
1st, Australia responded to the IRA big time. 🇦🇺 supplies 1/2 the worlds lithium + most other battery minerals. Much more will now be refined onshore. That means CO2👇10x + supply chain stability 👆
2nd, tonight Australia legislated strong vehicle CO2 standards to massively increase EV uptake in a >1m vehicles annual market. The standards are the most robustly designed I've seen globally (no loopholes!) and will save Aus motorists thousands of dollars on imported petrol.
These vehicle efficiency standards owe so much to the leadership of @Bowenchris + @CatherineKingMP and their excellent staff, and to @BJafari whose leadership of the Electric Vehicle Council has been pivotal. Bravo.
Good news! The FCAI no longer forecasts vehicle price impacts from New Vehicle Efficiency Standards. It told Fact Check today: "This is not a forecast on price impacts... Price and how penalties/credits are carried forward will be a matter for each brand" abc.net.au/news/2024-03-15/f…
"So Karl, next year if your vehicle you purchase doesn’t meet the standard as put out by the government you’ll have to pay a fine.... for the Ranger $6,000 more in the first year... The Mazda CX-5 you’re looking at $4,000 next year going up to almost $13,000 by 2029.”
Electric SUVs must be $47,200 cheaper to take off, and Cybertrucks would have to be discounted by $142,300, say the geniuses at @AAAcomms who have “assessed consumer preferences." 🙄🤦♂️ Meanwhile in the real world....

News from Tesla: we are leaving the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and resigning from its board. The FCAI has repeatedly made claims about new vehicle efficiency standards that are demonstrably false. We can't stand by that. Here's the letter. drive.google.com/file/d/1OPQ…
Days like today really show that @LilyDAmbrosioMP and the Vic Gov made a great call investing in big batteries.

And Victoria's spot power prices went from its ceiling high of $16,600/MWh to -$1000, as demand plunged by about a third. (Vis @AEMO_Energy )

Pretty cool chart from my team at BloombergNEF. In 2012, the standard solar module was multicrystalline silicon, 15.4% efficient and costing $1.09/W in 2023 $. In 2023, standard is mono PERC, efficiency 21.3%, price $0.13/W.

The first global temperature data is in for the full month of September. This month was, in my professional opinion as a climate scientist – absolutely gobsmackingly bananas. JRA-55 beat the prior monthly record by over 0.5C, and was around 1.8C warmer than preindutrial levels.
