Rutte: "One would hope that this war could be brought to an end, although it is unlikely that Ukraine will manage to recover all of its territory. What Ukraine is prepared to accept in an agreement is entirely up to Ukraine; only Zelensky and his government can decide that on behalf of the Ukrainian people. But wars of this kind always end with a peace agreement, which often entails some form of compromise."
What I find truly concerning about these statements is something that now seems to have vanished completely from the debate: international law.
There is hardly any mention anymore of the 1975 Helsinki Final Act, which enshrines the inviolability of borders and respect for the territorial integrity of states. There is no longer any talk of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, through which Ukraine relinquished the world’s third-largest nuclear arsenal in exchange for guarantees regarding its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The United Nations Charter—and its prohibition against the acquisition of territory by force—is no longer discussed.
Above all, it seems to have become a mere secondary detail that one of the world’s major nuclear powers invaded a country that had given up its own nuclear arsenal precisely on the strength of international guarantees.
People now discuss—with striking casualness—which territories Ukraine might or might not recover, which ones it might have to relinquish, and what kind of compromises could be considered realistic. The territories of a sovereign state are treated as if they were squares on a map to be shifted around during diplomatic negotiations. It has even reached the point where the loss of territory is presented as an established fact—as though it were a natural and inevitable outcome.
I am not saying that Ukraine will necessarily succeed in reclaiming every single inch of its territory. No one can predict how this war will end. But there is a vast difference between acknowledging a military reality and transforming it into a political and moral legitimization of aggression.
This is what I find appalling: the gradual normalization of the absence of law, the growing habituation to the violation of sovereignty, and the acceptance of the "law of the strongest" as the new standard for governing international relations.
If one country can invade another, occupy its territory, and then sit at the negotiating table to secure recognition for its conquests, what message does that send to the rest of the world? That the law only holds as long as those who break it aren't powerful enough to simply ignore it?
This is not *realpolitik*. It is an abandonment of the very principles upon which we built the international order following the Second World War—an order that, clearly, no longer exists.

Our economic system is broken. Our political system is broken. Even our relationships with each other feel broken.
That’s because the most powerful people in the world want it that way.

Last night Trump said he could have won Vietnam in a week. His plan was “going after Ho Chi Minh City.”
Ho Chi Minh City was Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. Our ally. The enemy’s capital was Hanoi. We bombed it.
He called the presidents who fought that war stupid, then explained how he’d have won it by attacking our own side.
58,220 Americans died in that war. Trump got five deferments. Now he’s telling the rest of us how easy it would have been.
He’s had more than fifty years to learn which side we were on. He still hasn’t. That alone should disqualify him from sending anybody else’s kids to war.
Instead, he’s weighing more strikes on Iran after Tuesday. His administration has reportedly considered using the “mother of all bombs,” the one he calls “like a tiny nuclear bomb.”
The man who thinks we should have bombed our ally’s capital gets to choose the targets.

Overnight, hackers took control of fridges and freezers in dozens of supermarkets across Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg and Ireland. Some were pushed to 50°C. Food had to be thrown away.
Three weeks ago, hundreds of French supermarkets were hit the same way.
This is what the attackers want to do: empty our shelves and disrupt our supplies.

I can’t stress this enough:
The shift in Israeli discourse of political legitimacy is new and real.
Never before had coalition with Arab parties been discussed so openly, and old taboos reexamined.
More so than in 2021-22, when Bennet and Lapid joined forces with Mansour Abbas.
It will be a battle, of course, but full Jewish-Arab political alliance is finally on the mainstream agenda.
Replying to @BernardBessis
What’s new and encouraging is that Arab participation in the government is finally normalized in mainstream Israeli discourse.
