The names are collectively placed so that all the names create the visual of the approximate land coverage of Michigan's upper peninsula. The place names were located as close as possible on the map to their location in the upper peninsula, and the size of the text for each place roughly corresponds to its human population. In other words, places with more people have larger text and places with fewer people have smaller text.
