🚨 SUMMARY: The OBR forecasts following John Healey's Budget
- Welfare spending will rise to £431.3bn by 2030/31 - an increase of £97.5bn a year in cash terms
- This includes £209.8bn on pensioner benefits, £110.7bn on Universal Credit, £69.6bn on disability benefits, £13.9bn on Child Benefit and £27.2bn on other welfare
- Inflation will peak at 3.75% in early 2027, up from the earlier prediction of 2%
- UK GDP growth will slow from around 1.25% in 2026 to 1% in 2027, before climbing to 1.6% in 2031
- Average UK unemployment will rise to 5.1% across 2026 and 2027
- The Employment Rights Act will "likely" have a negative economic impact because of reduced flexibility and greater uncertainty for businesses
- The landlord tax increases (property income) could contribute to a long-term rise in private rents and discourage landlords from entering the market
- Real household disposable income per person will be around 0.75% lower in 2030-31 than it expected in March 2026
- Higher earnings and frozen tax thresholds will increase income tax and National Insurance receipts by £9bn in 2026-27 and around £8bn on average in subsequent forecast years compared with March
- Net migration is forecast to fall to 120,000 in the year to mid-2026, then gradually rise to 230,000 by the year to mid-2031
- Nominal weekly earnings growth will slow to around 3.5% in 2026, then average roughly 2.25% a year
- Andy Burnham's first-time buyer scheme could raise house prices by increasing demand without enough new homes being built

This has my head fucking spun. This is on top of the 25bil already pledged I presume? Yet there’s no money? The middle class fucking wallies will be clapping like seals whilst bemoaning a minimum wage rise. Most of it goes into the US economy, boosting theirs and fucking ours.
🚨 NEW: John Healey has announced Ukraine will receive £10bn in additional economic and military support

I'm keeping a keen eye on events at the SOL. Kyril now needs to invest heavily in January. Thus far he has done a good job, but if he expects a bumper payday then he needs to get his chequebook out to protect PL status. You can't run with the hares and hunt with the hounds #SAFC

A year ago I spoke in more detail on why squeezing the middle & taxing those on £50k as rich doesn’t work. It’s not that I don’t want to help the poor, or I’m on the breadline… it’s all of this. Please do give it a read before leaving a comment 💛

This is crazy. If you have been on the mimimum wage since April 2020 you've had a 50% payrise in just 6 years. Meanwhile a skilled worker would be no where near these levels of pay increases.
There is no point in showing any ambition, get training, studying , promotions.

UK new minimum wage: £27,456 per year.
Higher-rate tax bracket: £50,270.
1.8x difference.
In 1997 there was a 5x difference.
Mind boggling.

The "do no harm budget." UK has gov spending near 45% of GDP, debt near 100%. Tax revenue at levels never sustained in the UK before. Crazy fiscal drag. Concerning high income emigration. That's harm enough. Fiddling with cash ISAs and marmalade prices doesn't cut it.

Lots of higher-rate taxpayers (like, er, me) live in houses that are assessed as band A to D for council tax. So this seems a very crude and not very useful way of proceeding.
(The Scottish government might not follow suit on this policy but will feel pressure to do so.)

Looks like savers & landlords are big losers in this Budget. Property income tax to rise to 24pc for basic rate taxpayers, 44pc for higher rate and 49pc for additional rate. Further punishment on those who work hard and do the right thing….

Freezing thresholds means more of your pay is taxed every year without anyone announcing a rise. Many people won't notice until it's on the payslip.

The biggest tax increase is no increase at all.
This stealth tactic is making millions poorer every year.
Something must be done to change this, it’s just unfair!
Sean retweeted
It's worth remembering that stealth taxes will still be at the heart of this Budget
They represent the biggest tax rise in history
Income tax thresholds have been frozen now since 2021 and are due to remain frozen until April 2031
The cumulative freezes of freezing thresholds and allowances is expected to raise ***£67billion*** by 2030/31
The higher rate - which was once the preserve of the rich - is now the norm for millions of people
By 2030/31 5.2million people will have been brought into paying income tax, there will be 4.8million more higher rate taxpayers and 600,000 more additional rate taxpayers
A ***quarter*** of taxpayers will be higher rate or additional rate taxpayers
We've reached the stage where this huge tax raid is almost priced in every year, but it is far more significant than any other tax-raising measure on the scorecard
Paul Johnson, a former head of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, said: "We are talking many, many billions of pounds of tax rises over the decade. People who would 20 years ago have never imagined they would be higher-rate taxpayers are now higher-rate taxpayers."

Short of starting his speech by declaring "This is a Budget for a May 2027 election" I'm not sure how clearer John Healey could have been on what the Government's plan is.
No surprises here. Probably follows Hamas too.
Even by SNP standards, they really are scraping the bottom of the barrel with this lunatic.
