New blog post: Query Engines: Gatekeepers of the Parquet File Format In this post, Laurens Kuiper argues that we are wasting a lot of bits by not using the Parquet format to its full extent – a limitation caused by the lack of support for Parquet features in some systems. duckdb.org/2025/01/22/parque…

Last year, I added a new integer type to DuckDB called VARINT, capable of storing up to 1,262,612 digits. I initially implemented a quadratic algorithm to convert it to VARCHAR, which was slow. (My plan was to eventually get inspired by CPython.) However, an external contributor beat me to it: github.com/duckdb/duckdb/pul… They even referenced "The Art of Computer Programming" and implemented a solution that's more than an order of magnitude faster than my naive approach. Just excellent!

Last week I focused on addressing quirks in python-build-standalone and fixing the common pain points with uv-installed Pythons. For example: if you've ever run into this tkinter error, it's now fixed.

We upgraded to Postgres 17 last week and I ran numbers for real life perf gains over the ~9 days worth of API telemetry since. They are looking VERY good, with a 15% reduction in request duration at P50. Even better than my synthetic bench a few months back. Writeup to come.

A core value I try to instill in everyone on my team is to be helpful, both to each other and especially to customers. One way we do that is by educating, teaching about Postgres and great data practices. At conferences my favorite thing we hand out is not about our products or SWAG. Yes, I love our kids activity book that has coloring pages, word search, and then activities to teach kids SQL, but it's not my favorite thing. It's a handout with a collection of Postgres tips.

I am predictably triggered by this 1 billion loops benchmark thing. If you vectorize the Python, it's ~10x faster than Rust, C, etc. With less code! The point here is _not_ that Python itself is fast. It's not! The point is that Python makes this accessible, and even the norm!
