Non-NYer’s won’t pick up on the significance of this, but the Mayor’s and Governor’s offices have historically had a very adversarial relationship. Hochul and Mamdani working this closely together is a monumental change in NY politics. Hasn’t been like this since the ‘50s.

🚨 TEXAS VOTED. THREE DAYS LATER, HOUSTON CHANGED ITS ICE POLICY.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire signed an order limiting when city police contact ICE over civil immigration warrants.
Officers generally will no longer notify ICE solely because of such a warrant during routine, non-jailable encounters.
Police can still contact ICE in qualifying arrest cases. Federal immigration enforcement continues.
The change came three days after Democrats' sweeping Texas election victories.
Whitmire had previously resisted restrictions on ICE cooperation.
Now, he says:
“I ALSO DO THIS KNOWING THAT ELECTIONS MATTER.”
This wasn't just a campaign promise. Houston changed its police procedures before the new governor even took office.
ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES. SO DOES LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY.

ICE didn’t exist before this century. It’s not part of the Constitution. ICE is not about immigration. It’s about making a show of immigration and normalising paramilitary force on our streets.
I believe we need to undo it and build a system that enforces immigration law while respecting the Constitution.

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed: No. You have to have borders that you can control. There’s no question about that.
People think ICE is about border enforcement, but it’s not. Customs and Border Protection enforces the border. ICE handles immigration enforcement inside the country.
