The function that changed WordPress forever.
In January 2004, @photomatt (aka saxmatt) committed the first version of add_action() as part of WP 1.2’s Plugin API. This single function unlocked extensibility, transforming WordPress from a simple blogging tool into a developer powerhouse.
Without add_action(), there would be no plugins, no themes hooking into WP events—no WordPress ecosystem as we know it today.
A pivotal moment that now powers 43.5% of the internet in 2025.
