Google Ngrams tells a story: 'Economic Development' peaked and faded. 'Human Rights' exploded. Did we solve poverty — or just rebrand the conversation?

The White House just released its fact sheet on the India deal. Interesting how the spin gets stronger with each iteration! Joint statement: India "intends to purchase" $500 billion White House fact sheet: India "committed to buy" $500 billion Also notable what the fact sheet emphasizes vs. what it omits: ✅ Emphasizes: India "will eliminate or reduce tariffs" (still not "to zero") ✅ Emphasizes: India "committed to buy" over $500 billion Omits: The flexibility clause allowing either side to modify commitments. The joint statement had a clause stating if either country changes its tariffs, the other can modify its commitments. Translation: if circumstances change, all bets are off. Much is still to be negotiated. Many instances of "will negotiate rules of origin," "committed to negotiate digital trade rules," "will work toward finalizing." The bottom line is that these aren't done deals - they're commitments to keep talking. Both sides are throwing up a lot of smoke to grab headlines. I don't think India's tariff system is being dismantled. So far, this is more performative than substantive. #USIndia #IndiaUSTrade #IndiaUSJointStatement #IndiaUSdeal whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2…

There's been panic over the India-US trade deal, but read the actual joint statement carefully! Trump claims India agreed to "zero tariffs." The text says "eliminate OR reduce" - with flexibility clauses letting either side modify commitments if circumstances change. Trump won: procedural improvements on customs and standards, some Russian oil reduction. Modi won: US tariffs slashed from 50% to 18%, massive relief for exporters. The $500 billion purchase figure? Called an "intent" in official documents, not a binding commitment. India's tariff structure, built over 75 years to protect farmers and industrial conglomerates, still stands. It can't be dismantled through external pressure alone. That was always the reality, regardless of the political theater. #USIndia #IndiaUSTrade #tariffs

I've been arguing that agricultural subsidies are the core of the Indian state. That makes them almost impossible to reform. But what if the answer isn't fixing India's agricultural markets — but building new ones? #India @georgetownsfs @GeorgetownGHD businessworld.in/article/thi…

Shareen Joshi writes why India won’t lower its tariffs, even under Trump’s pressure. As India faces pressure to reduce tariffs, the political reality is clear: dismantling its protectionist structure risks political survival. With a dual constituency of farmers and industrialists, any significant reform would challenge the very foundation of India's political landscape. #IndiasWorld #TradePolicy @shareenjoshi Read the article here: indiasworld.in/why-india-won…
