ALT A Letter to the Student Movement In the early hours of the 12th of January, the UK and USA launched a bombing campaign against Yemen, including four British Typhoon fighter jets launched from British-occupied Cyprus. This is the latest step of aggression from the imperial core against those resisting western hegemony. It follows Anglo-American backing for the genocidal Saudi bombing campaign of Yemen that has led to what the UN has described as the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis”. It is the first direct use of British troops against Yemen itself in the current conflict (instead of hiding behind the smokescreen of the House of Saud), but follows murderous western interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria in recent years.

ALT This military action can only be viewed as an intervention in support of the Israeli genocide in Gaza. The UK government may wish to whitewash their actions with claims of ‘acting in the interests of global security’, however the truth is far from this. It shows western governments acting purely in defence of western capital - protecting the “free flow of commerce” and propping up the murderous outpost of US imperialism that is the Israeli state. As US supremacy is collapsing, Britain is eagerly rushing to her aid.

ALT Our universities are deeply complicit, with military and “defence” partnerships worth over one billion pounds. This does not just take the form of investments but also direct research partnerships where universities use their students and staff to help develop technology for military use in return for payment from arms manufacturers and the Ministry of “Defence”. Universities are using students’ labour and tuition fees to develop and build weapons, enriching themselves whilst they act to protect the interests of western corporations. A failure to act makes us all complicit in genocide.

ALT We call upon the student movement to take direct action to resist the status of our universities as tools of imperialism. We call on students to fight the arms companies’ and the British military’s recruitment drive across our campuses; investment ties to the arms trade and research partnerships with weapons manufacturers and the armed forces. Shut down careers fairs and recruitment events, occupy management offices and lecture theatres, and blockade arms factories and military bases - think imaginatively about where you can make the biggest impact.
