A school left in neglect. Garbage dumped where children once learned. That was the starting point for our partner community school at Government English and Tamil Medium Higher Primary School, in Shivajinagar, Bengaluru. We came in, rolled up our sleeves and got to work. Today, children and their laughter are coming back. Many of them come from families of daily wage workers, auto drivers and domestic workers. Many carry more than any child should. For them, school is more than a place to learn maths and English. It is a safe place. A place where a glass of milk is waiting, where someone notices when they walk in, where they get to simply be children. That is the work of the teachers and staff who show up every day, not only as educators but as caregivers and nurturers. We’ve come to believe that education leadership is, at its heart, about creating the conditions for a childhood. Everything else grows from there.
