LAUNCH DAY 🚀 Today I’m launching a new podcast, Hard Drugs, with Jacob Trefethen (@JacobTref)
Our first episode is about lenacapavir — a new HIV drug that blocks infections with an efficacy rate of nearly 100%, and which could completely change the fight against HIV worldwide.
It’s also about the scientific journey leading up to this point, and how HIV was transformed from a lethal to a manageable condition.
3:52 How was HIV discovered? Where did it come from, and how does it attack the body and cause AIDS?
38:10 Antiretrovirals: How did scientists develop breakthrough HIV drugs — from azidothymidine to protease inhibitors to PrEP?
1:51:35 How does prevention and treatment work today?
2:19:03 HIV’s capsid and the breakthrough of lenacapavir, the first-approved HIV capsid inhibitor
2:50:36 How to develop long-lasting treatments
3:14:45 Lenacapavir’s near 100% efficacy in clinical trials
3:48:40 The impact of global programs against HIV, and can we now end HIV?

A fun new diagram and article I wrote recently.
“Why isn't it possible to sum up deaths caused by different risk factors?”
This problem is frequently overlooked, which means people don't realise that the same deaths can be prevented in multiple ways. ourworldindata.org/why-isnt-…

The saga of Israeli water management is one of the most inspiring stories of the last 75 years
Israel went from having a serious water problem to being a net water exporter to neighboring countries. Meanwhile, the population grew from ~1 million to well over 9 million

My heart is breaking for those affected by #CycloneFreddy. Malawi's death toll is at 476. Almost half a million are displaced, around 350 missing, and 900+ injured. The ongoing cholera outbreak looks set to spiral. A 🧵w/ latest updates and ways you can support relief efforts:

.@ATabarrok 's chapter/book is an important reminder to colleagues working on healthcare in LMICs. Yes, the price of PCR machines. NGS machines, Cold Chain equipment will keep going down, but the maintenance and repair market for these is where we need to focus critical inquiry.
Machines build. People repair.
Ultimately, this explains why repair services (shoes, clothing & cars but also people & pets, i.e. health care) rise in relative price over time. #baumol

An excellent thread. Surveillance over paranoia,evidence-based v knee-jerk reactions, risk-based+voluntary+high-efficiency masking v mandatory universal masking are what’s needed. We really need evolved responses after 3 years of experience and data.

UN projections for peak population in Nigeria are crashing —part of global phenomenon of even-more-rapid-than-predicted fertility decline.
the 2021 MCIS estimates Nigeria has a TFR of 4.6, coming in .6 lower than the UN WPP prospects estimate for 2021 of 5.2. that's a level they weren't projected to hit until 2028.
