You can silence Indian citizens by threatening them, but the genie has left the bottle and CEO of a $100bn company is talking about it. Some introspection would be welcome.

📌 Before randomly commenting about what a host is expected to do, read this carefully. A lot of people are missing a very simple point. If someone picks up their plate and the host stops them, that’s hospitality and respect. But if someone automatically assumes someone else will pick it up, that’s entitlement. There’s a huge difference between being offered courtesy and expecting it. Let me give you another example. Imagine you go to a restaurant with someone. When the bill arrives, you reach for your wallet and offer to pay. The other person stops you and says, ‘Please, let me pay.’ That’s courtesy and respect. Now imagine you don’t even attempt to pay because you automatically assume the other person will. That’s entitlement. The same logic applies here. If my guest had picked up his plate, I would have stopped him. The point isn’t who ultimately pays the bill or picks up the plate. It’s whether you automatically expect someone else to do it. There’s a huge difference between being offered something and taking it for granted.

VIDEO | Addressing a press conference Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi says, "Athira from Kerala has lost her hearing in one ear. She is deaf in one ear because she was struck on that ear. She can no longer hear. Last time I showed you a boy who was blinded. Now, she is deaf in one ear." Athira, says, "I am from Kerala, studying at Delhi University. Yesterday, when they detained us, there were no female police officers in the bus. So, I simply asked, 'Where is the lady police officer or lady constable?' If they want to detain us, having at least one female constable present is mandatory. Then, the bus moved and stopped in front of the Connaught Place police station, where they continuously hit my entire cheek. Because of this, I have an injury to my eye and damage to my ear..." + Read for the detailing -- the casual language in which policemen excuse their violence, the practical problems that arise when you take someone’s phone and deposit them on the outskirts of a city, well after dark... And read it for the other side of the equation: the lawyers who turn up to help strangers; the young who get over their initial fright and begin arguing with the cops. Read for how fear gives way to solidarity.

+ He watched policemen systematically beat people as they boarded: blows to the abdomen, elbows to the back, kicks. One youngster was pushed to the floor and beaten; another was stamped on. Shekhar's account follows the detainees through the long hours that followed: a journey that took the detainees some 40 kilometres from Connaught Place. Their phones were confiscated; the injured looked in vain for medical attention. Some of those picked up were people who hadn’t even been protesting. +

. @mrajshekhar is an exceptional reporter, as witness the ground reporting that resulted in the book Despite The State. He was in Delhi, chronicling the protests, when the police detained him. What happens when the doors of the bus close on the detainees is the theme of this superb essay: newslaundry.com/2026/10/14/w…

"The way in which female protesters and female journalists are displaying their strength and imagination in these last few months will have far-reaching consequences. I saw a video in which a woman protester surrounded by Delhi Police asked a pertinent question: In a country where at least 86 rapes take place every day, and the police is nowhere in sight to protect women on the streets or elsewhere, how come there were so many of them present to stop her from protesting?" 👇
What do the protests in Delhi mean for the rest of the world? amitavakumar.substack.com/p/…

This frame is the entirety of the BJP's problem. They spent 12 years, and oodles of money, to frame Indian politics as a binary -- a choice between Modi and Rahul Gandhi. And to denigrate the latter to the point where the choice was seemingly no choice at all. Many stayed away because to oppose Modi was ipso facto seen as to support RG. That is what has shifted. For the disaffected, it is no longer a binary. Don't like the Congress? No matter -- there is the CJP. Ambivalent about the CJP? There is Neha Bora. You can now stand for a cause without that stance being openly linked to a preference for a particular Opposition politician. And that is also the BJP's biggest failing: Modi's aura has been brutally punctured in the previous GenZ protests. And the party has no other leader who can come forward to give Modi some badly needed air cover, some breathing space.
🚨🔥 BIG NEHA BORA WALKING ALONGSIDE RAHUL GANDHI AND PRIYANKA GANDHI! 🇮🇳✊

as one of the detainees in pandwalan khurd today, this thread is absolutely correct
This is the most horrific detention story you will hear today. At 8 PM, this bus stopped at a community centre in Pandwalan Khurd (see photo). Detainees fractured. Four minors present. Everyone barbarically beaten up. No lawyers allowed to enter. This is how we got here. ⬇️

Your annual reminder that today is October 2, when Ajay Devgn went to Panjim with his family to attend Satsang. They stayed in a hotel, had paav bhaji, and watched a movie. I have tweeted this every year since 2018.

Pooja Meri Jaan. Now streaming on Zee5. On days like these I want to pinch myself. I make movies for a living. A 12th fail from a small town called Bareilly lives in the city of dreams and tells stories for a living. And gets hundreds of people to work on something he thought of and it gets seen by lakhs of people. Sapne poore hotey hai. Dekhne ki Himmat honi chahiye bas. And yes, thankyou Papa. For watching over your creation from wherever you are!! #PoojaMeriJaan

I am embarrassed to say that for the longest time, I was vaguely aware that October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I knew about it somewhere in the periphery of the random things I was aware about, but I did not understand the enormity of its importance. I do now. It took a biopsy, surgery, chemo, radiation and eight months of my life to help me realise it. Yes, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For a few weeks the pink ribbon is everywhere. The media will be full of pink ribbons, there will be walks, campaigns, articles with scary statistics everywhere, all well meaning, aimed at urging women to do their self examinations and get their mammograms done. Dear reader, I did neither. It was an errant soapy hand, soaping self in the shower when I realised there was a marble under the skin on my left breast. And it didn’t pain. Nothing. I was dismissive at first. I’ve been an ostrich most of my life, and this was no different. The husband felt it some days later and dragged my sorry ass to the doctor the very next morning. And then what had to unfold unfolded in the strange aseptic way illness unfolds, like you are an observer watching is happening to your body, to you, feeling terrified at one moment and totally calm the next. Infiltrating duct carcinoma. NST. Grade 3. Read it here: kiranmanral.substack.com/p/w…
