This is a remarkable chart. World cereal yield compared to population and land use. Production continues to increase with essentially the same land use. This is sustainable intensification, same land, more product, thanks to genetics, management, and technology.

An anonymous group of Hongkongers did this on New Year’s Eve amid severe crackdowns on political freedoms. They would be jailed for years if caught. That’s bravery in action. Release ALL political prisoners now. #HongKong

Baffling, bonkers and intolerable that energy production in the 21st century depends on the weather, the wind, just as sailing ships did at start of 19th. What a dereliction of duty – at Elsene, België
The wind speed has started to improve across Europe, easing pressure on electricity and gas markets. It could be short-lived, however, with potential for again low winds in continental Europe by early next week. But, for now, it's blowing again | #EnergyCrisis

The economic convergence of the EU, one aspect of which is shown nicely in the FT today, is great news. I think that we should ask why similar convergence doesn't seem to happen in the UK, especially since it has happened within many countries such as Germany, Netherlands, etc...

Crikey. That's about €13,000 a head
Replying to @faisalislam
More to the point - Norway has 1) earned easily €70bn in “excess war related gas profits”since prices began rising above historical levels in Sep 2021.

All 9 German nuclears - including the 6 already shut down - are fit for purpose until 2026 at least... – at Elsene, België

Saw this tweet. I voted Remain. But I was disappointed by the replies. It just feels so unrealistic. So I'll do a proper reply. I would miss the freedom and accountability. The idea that if I wanted to enact big change on my place and my country I could vote, win, and do it.

A very good example of my database state theory yesterday. There is a database of ‘people paying energy bills who we can quickly get money to’. There is no database of ‘homes paying energy bills that are non-rented second homes’.

This paper is a breath of much needed fresh air. Should be given serious consideration by all the main parties and key players in Northern Ireland + EU, UK and US. 1/2
New paper alert! On the vexed subject of the Northern Ireland Protocol. Quite simply it does not look like the right vehicle to resolve political disagreement between the UK and EU. We need a new approach, that builds on and takes inspiration from 1998. ecipe.org/publications/fresh…

The vaccine passports debate is a perfect illustration of my new working theory: that the most important part of modern government, and its most important limitation, is database management. Please stick with me on this - it's much more interesting than it sounds. (1/?)

In advance of the replies, not What.Three.Words. No. Postcodes are loads better for almost all use cases. And latitude and longitude as numbers (transmitted digitally) are loads better for almost all use cases that postcodes aren't better for.
