The end of "the jet fighter on water skis"
OTD in 1954: a Convair F2Y-1 Sea Dart disintegrates in mid-air in California (US), pilot Charles E. Richbourg dies. The YF2Y-1 - a prototype seaplane jet fighter - was on a demo flight to officials and press. Pilot inadvertently exceeded airframe limitations.
Shortly after the accident, the program was axed. At that stage the progress made in the performance of Carrier-Based aircrafts made the Sea Dart surplus to US Navy requirements. Video shows the type on trials around 1953.

This is co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras taking off in the very Learjet 60 N722BD that crashed yesterday at Greenacres, Palm Beach County, Florida. The 20-year-old aviator earned her private pilot's license at just 17, before even getting her driver's license. She clearly loved aviation from a young age.

Protected and tracked since 2013, he helped shape conservation efforts for other tuskers.

Whatever happened to them in the Space Race ?
This slow backflip came out of a painful lesson. After Columbia was lost in 2003 because of heat shield damage, NASA added the rendezvous pitch maneuver.
About 600 feet below the space station, the shuttle rotated a full circle while station crew shot its heat shield tiles with long telephoto lenses, and engineers on the ground studied the photos for damage.
I rate it one of the smartest fixes NASA ever made.
