Some people are just not right.
In 1973, college girls in Santa Cruz would get into a stranger's car and spend the ride guessing what the killer looked like. The driver was the killer. His name was Ed Kemper. Students had been warned to accept rides only from cars with a university sticker. His mother worked at UC Santa Cruz, so he had one. He was 6 foot 9, and his IQ had tested at 145. At 15 he shot and killed his grandparents. He was released at 21, against the advice of the hospital's psychiatrists, and in November 1972 his juvenile record was erased. By then he had already killed three times. The day after he killed a 15-year-old girl named Aiko Koo, he sat in front of a panel of psychiatrists for a parole check. They found no reason to consider him dangerous. He had wanted to be a cop, but he was rejected for being too tall. So he drank with cops instead, at a bar across the street from the courthouse, and asked them how the investigation was going. Kemper says a detective once came to his house to take away a gun he wasn't supposed to have. The loaded .22 he had used in the murders was under the front seat of his car. A purse, a book bag and the IDs of his last two victims were in a box in his bedroom closet. The detective left thinking he was a nice, helpful guy. In the video below, recorded in prison in 1984, Kemper tells these stories himself. In April 1973 he killed his mother and her best friend, then called the Santa Cruz police from a phone booth in Colorado to confess. They thought it was a joke and told him to call back later. He asked for death by torture and got life instead. He is 77 now and was denied parole again in 2024. Psychiatrists, cops and the girls in his passenger seat all looked at him and saw nothing. Who was supposed to stop him?

Is this a joke? Seriously, Carers Allowance is £80 a week which works out to less than £2 per “caring hour”. Most of the carers I know are too exhausted and stressed to have another job. How is not cutting it off completely actually helping? 😭
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced five "everyday fixes" ahead of the Budget 1. Carer's Allowance will be changed so carers no longer lose their entire benefit when they earn over the limit - instead, their support will reduce by £1 for every extra £1 they earn 2. Import tariffs will be removed on more than 100 products, including baked beans, chocolate and gherkins, to save households up to £21 on their food shop a year 3. Tax-free mileage rates for workers using their own cars will be made permanent at 55p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, with the rate for additional miles rising from 25p to 35p 4. Parental pay will be extended to over 150,000 more parents a year, including self-employed fathers and partners 5. Hundreds more Post Office drop boxes will be rolled out to save people queueing at branches

If my brother was running that shoot there would be no booze between drives. Last thing you need is a bunch of guys who only shoot once a year with their brains fuddled on booze shooting in any direction that might include beaters and dogs.

There is a Scottish island where Christmas Day falls on 6 January, and New Year's Day on 13 January. Foula, about 32 km (20 mi) west of mainland Shetland and home to fewer than 40 people, never fully adopted the calendar the rest of Britain switched to in 1752. 1/2

I feel like they didn’t make enough of the fact his shop is named “Sgt Prepper”. I mean, that’s genius.
"Order, after order, after order - most of them were for a wind-up radio" Josh Pringle who runs online survival store Sgt Prepper says he's "busier than ever" after the government urged people to stock up for a crisis. #Newsnight

I’m finding it hard to keep up with this season but this episode alone made it worth watching. Kinnear is absolutely brilliant. He’s an incredible actor and it was lovely to see him really get material he can stretch.
Yes, that really is Rory Kinnear singing in Episode 4 of The Diplomat!

Mount Athos. Procession with the Iveron Icon. Photogallery orthochristian.com/98133.htm… One of the greatest sacred shrines of the Christian world is the miracle-working Iveron icon of the Mother of God, located in the Iverson Monastery on Mount Athos. Twice a year the monks make a solemn cross procession with this icon.

PETITION STARTED BY LEAH’S PARENTS - please sign and share 🙏 Our daughter Leah Croucher went missing on 15 February 2019, walking to work. Her body was found three and a half years later, in the loft of a house half a mile from our family home. The man who killed her, Neil Maxwell, was a convicted sex offender with a history of serious offending going back to 1998. Months before Leah disappeared, he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman and was sentenced to a Community Order, not prison. The Probation Service wrongly classified him as medium risk instead of high risk. He then missed a number of Probation appointments, and a police officer raised concerns about his lack of communication just weeks before Leah went missing. He evaded arrest for six months. During that time, he murdered Leah and took his own life. The Coroner ruled that Leah was unlawfully killed, and that failures by the Police and Probation Service in monitoring Maxwell "may have played a part" in her death. That's why we, Leah's parents, are calling for Leah's Law: a mandatory minimum prison sentence for anyone convicted of a third sexual offence.  Mandatory minimums already exist for domestic burglary and Class A drug trafficking. There's no justifiable reason sexual offending should be treated more leniently. By a third conviction, it is self-evident that the offender has not been sufficiently deterred from further offending. Where a case falls below that threshold, we are calling for a District Judge to oversee sentencing in all repeat sexual offence cases, so a decision like the one that let Maxwell walk free can never be made again. This would have ensured he had no opportunity to kill Leah, and that the risk he presented on his release would have been vastly reduced. Sign for Leah, and for every family this could still protect. change.org/p/leah-s-law-mand…

a man followed me for 4 exits because i tapped my horn once. not a long honk. the little polite one you do when someone doesn't notice the light turned green. i think about him every single time i get in a car now silver nissan altima. he wasn't yelling, he wasn't even mad looking. he was just staring at me in my rearview at every light, eating sunflower seeds and spitting the shells out the window one at a time like he had all day. he did have all day. i had a 2pm i didn't go home because i didn't want him to know where home was. i drove to a kroger and parked right by the entrance under the big light where the carts are, because i'd read once that's what you're supposed to do. i sat there for 25 minutes holding my keys between my fingers like i was going to fight a nissan he did one slow lap through the parking lot and left. i went inside and bought a rotisserie chicken i didn't want because i felt like i owed kroger something for keeping me alive the whole 25 minutes i kept opening my contacts trying to decide who to call and realized there was nobody i could call at 1:40pm on a tuesday without it being weird. i called my mom. she didn't pick up. she texted back "busy what's up" and i said "nothing just saying hi" that was 2019. i haven't honked since. someone cuts me off, i let them. someone sits at a green light scrolling instagram, i wait. i say "come on buddy" very quietly to my own steering wheel so nobody can hear it, not even the car my friends think i became a calm person. i didn't. i just assume everyone on the road is having the worst day of their life with a tire iron under the seat, and i'd like to make it to thursday last week a woman behind me honked because i was going exactly the speed limit. i waved at her. i don't know why i waved. she looked terrified
You guys underestimate how dangerous people actually are. People get killed for honking at cars. It doesn’t matter your tone, intentions, etc. you never really know when people are ready to go out and they have no problem taking others with them

Widespread swathe of gales across Scotland on southern flank of Boelo. Stornoway gusting 82mph, and this core of storm-force winds will transfer to the far north/northeast this afternoon, and edging into Orkney. Gradual reduction from south through afternoon. Weather.obs display.

Hey @JohnLewisRetail can you just stop pretending you have a Haberdashery ‘area’? This is the Edinburgh store - no grey thread. Hardly ANY thread. The memory of buying all my fabric there for my wedding dress, the staff who were incredibly knowledgeable, all gone for kits & crap.
