We all know paint touches and ball reversals are extremely important for a productive offense. I decided to dive into our numbers at Olentangy HS last year thanks to inspiration from the below tweet. Here’s what I found 🧵 👇
Ball Reversals 🤝 Paint Touches Data like this is extremely powerful. This is a study of 12 'high level D1 schools'. Regardless of level, the goal is to get to 1.00 PPP. Out of any system/style, this data shows us the key to having an efficient offense is having an element of penetration and kick. Paint touches, and paint touches + ball reversal limit the amount of straight line close outs. They also slow down defensive decision making, which keeps the offense in a big advantage situation. PAINT TOUCH + BALL REVERSAL is a MUST in half court and secondary transition. Think DOMINOES. An easy way to teach this using CLA is: - no paint or ball reversal is +0 - paint touch is + 1 - paint touch + ball reversal is +2 - explain/emphasize hockey assists and TRACK THEM @ShotTracker

An important reminder from Atomic Habits by James Clear: “It doesn't make sense to continue wanting something if you're not willing to do what it takes to get it. If you don't want to live the lifestyle, then release yourself from the desire. To crave the result but not the process is to guarantee disappointment.”

Tom Brady shares the advice that changed his career and his mindset. He was at Michigan - he was only getting 2 practice reps while the starter got 20. He was complaining to sports psychologist Greg Harden: "How can I ever get better? All these guys get all the reps and I only get 2." Greg's response changed everything: "Just go in there and focus with the 2 that you got and make them as perfect as you possibly can." Focus on what you can control. So that's what he did. "They'd put me in for those 2. Man, I'd sprint in there like it was Super Bowl 49. 'Let's go boys! Here we go! What play we got?'" "I did really well with those 2 'cause I brought enthusiasm, I brought some energy, and I had a little more confidence in myself." You don't get what you want in life - you get what you earn. It starts with showing up and earning it every single day. "It went from 2 reps to getting 4 reps because those 2 were pretty good. Then I had 4 good reps. Then I got 10 good reps." You can always try to lead the team in effort, attitude, and perspective because it takes no talent. Then he shared the mindset shift: "Focus on what you can control. Focus on what you're getting, not what anyone else is getting. Whenever you get an opportunity, you take advantage of it. You treat it like it's the Super Bowl." Stop complaining about what you don't have. Dominate what you do. Opportunity doesn't care about fairness - it rewards how ready you are. (🎥PBD Podcast )

Olentangy just got a really nice win over Detroit Voyageur Prep. 2027 PG Ty Walburn is poised for a monster senior season scoring and distributing. 2029 Mason Rathbun finished with 21 points on 5-5 from three in the victory. The Braves will be contenders to repeat as district champions this winter. @WalburnTy @MasonRathbun29

Great for players to hear. @dallasmavs coach Jared Dudley how to impact winning in a world that is obsessed with scoring: 🔒 Defend Multiple Positions 🛞 Drive and Kick Decision Making 🎯 What's Your One Outlier Trait? Social media glorifies the 20+ point per game scorer. But most teams already have one, or two of those guys. What they’re really searching for are the players who dominate in the margins: boxing out, sprinting back, diving on the floor, the second effort, the winning habit repeated over and over again. Your value isn’t determined by how many minutes you get. It’s determined by what you do with the minutes you've earned. Because that impact creates trust. And that trust creates opportunity. And the players who consistently help the team grow usually end up growing themselves.

🏀 Coaches and Staff of all levels! ‼️ If you are returning to the same program for next season… this should be a personal priority this off-season: Step 1️⃣: Take your Job Responsibility sheet and start taking notes of what you accomplished last year, how to improve in these areas and how to be more efficient. Step 2️⃣: Brainstorm areas within the program that if given more intentional effort this area could vastly improve. This can be any facet (camps, baseline out of bounds, season ticket sales, recruiting visits, locker room upgrades, player development etc.) Step 3️⃣: Choose 1-2 of these items of importance to you. Do Research.. Start building out a pitch on how to improve that area and Create the entire new model. Complete the entire process, pick it a part, ask questions and continue to build until it’s bullet proof. Step 4️⃣: Ask your head coach to meet about upgrading that area within the program. Give your pitch with something visual to show and explain. • It’s okay if your Head Coach says “No” to the update, it’s their program… but from experience, if you identify a growth area and create a full solution to improve it without much of their time your HC will likely say “Yes”. • Just know, if you are not fulfilling your Job Responsibilities well as laid out in Step 1️⃣ then don’t expect your HC to be excited about you venturing beyond what they’ve asked of you. Built Trust is important and that initially comes from being great at what they’ve asked of you! Step 5️⃣: Go complete the plan! Once done, come back and show your HC the results. This continues to create a stronger form of Trust. This also shows you can be a self-starter and grows your knowledge of building a program.
