🆕 Can forecasting social science make experiments better?
Today on VoxDev, @sdellavi (@berkeleyecon) & @evavivalt (@UofT) discuss why research forecasts overestimate effects, and how to correct and reweight them:

Cool feature over at the @SocSciPredict!
I did a lot of forecasting there from 2023-2024, making 247 predictions across 38 studies ranking 28/1863 by amount of forecasts made.
Overall, my accuracy (MAE) rank is 21/106, which I'm pretty happy with!
The Social Science Prediction Platform has a new feature: a leaderboard showcasing those who provided the most forecasts or were the most accurate. Forecasters can opt into displaying their name.
You can also see your own rank if logged in. Check it out! @sdellavi @socscipredict

This might be a good time to re-up this thread - some of the graphics are out of date but it has some good tips.
Since starting the Superforecaster Panel, no survey posted to the platform has gotten fewer than 50-60 forecasts, which is plenty for comparing to an observed effect.
A thread to highlight some features of the Social Science Prediction Platform that may not be obvious: 🧵👇

I second! @evavivalt did pioneering work on research transparency and development economics, collecting a remarkable data set of hundreds of RCTs. In the last 5 years we have collaborated on the @socscipredict Platform. She also co-leads the Y combinator cash transfers, out soon
So many young stars changing the world in economics and occasionally I try to draw attention to one of them in my area. Today my young star alert is @evavivalt!
Her work, especially on the science of using science, is pathbreaking. Can't wait to watch her continue to change the world.

@DavidRhysBern of @PSEinfo evaluates predictions for long-run causal effects in seven studies, finding that while “expert” forecasters perform slightly better than academics and laypeople, no particular individual characteristics lead to more accurate predictions. #BITSSFW2023

As part of @socscipredict, @tedmiguel and team gathered forecasts of the program impact. Reviewing the prediction patterns between decision makers and researchers, they found that their impact predictions were highly similar - and mostly accurate across dimensions. #BITSSFW2023

With growth of impact evaluations, @evavivalt at @UofT & Director of @GPIOxford looks at evidence-informed community & asks: How do researchers and policymakers weigh impact evals? It turns out, evidence suggests researchers care more abt exp. methods & big samples. #BITSSFW2023
