This shows just how little the anti-net-zero lobby understand. The problem for the U.K. is that natural gas sets the price of electricity more often than in other European countries. That is the main reason for our high electricity prices.

And it’s not just the drought. Water supplies are at risk in Yorkshire due to plans for onshore gas drilling. #lineinthechalk drillordrop.com/2026/02/06/g…
Water supplies may run dry because of the drought. Great exclusive from Aubrey Allegretti here. It’s time the media and journalists unionise and pressure their editors and owners to pressure govt for the @nebriefing The public deserve to hear from scientists and not wealthy establishment figures with megaphones like @afneil @LordAshcroft @DavidGHFrost @mickbooker @JuliaHB1 etc Or don’t. And we’ll just continue to slide quietly into calamity. It’s only going to get worse.

Exc: Ministers have been secretly warned that some English reservoirs are at risk of running dry, hitting water supplies to homes in the run-up to Christmas. The government’s emergency committee, known as Cobra, is meeting up to twice a week to discuss the situation in the southwest of England and Sussex. A secret “reasonable worst-case scenario” was drawn up, anticipating that several reservoirs’ water stocks could fall to 0 per cent — dubbed “day zero” — within weeks. Officials warned that without action, supplies to some homes could be affected, along with disruption to the construction of a nuclear power station and operations at a prison. Steps have been taken by ministers and water companies to try to mitigate the risks, which insiders stressed were already starting to push back the “day zero” dates. Experts on the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) have also been brought in to help review water companies’ modelling for protecting stocks for the weeks ahead. Heatwaves over the summer left half of England in drought. Sussex and the southwest were the most severely affected. Wimbleball reservoir, which supplies more than 400,000 people in Somerset, has 13 per cent of its capacity, while Ardingly, which serves 280,000 customers across West Sussex, is at 17 per cent, figures from yesterday show. Reasonable worst-case scenario plans were drawn up by the government, setting out a “day zero” envisaging Wimbleball and Ardingly reservoirs’ stocks being completely depleted by December. Subsequently, the government privately said it was told by South West Water that it did not anticipate Wimbleball running dry due to measures it had put in place. South East Water is also taking action that has shifted Whitehall “day zero” forecasts at Ardingly into next year. Even if the reservoirs did run completely dry, water companies would probably be able to transfer supplies from elsewhere. However, significant concerns remain in government about water disruption to properties supplied by Devon’s Venford reservoir in early November. “Day zero” risk monitoring has also started for Cornwall’s Stithians and Drift reservoirs. Water companies were asked to model the impact of water-saving measures, which have been scrutinised by members of Sage. Ministers were told that shortages could affect daily operations at HMP Exeter and the construction of Hinkley Point C, a nuclear power station being built in Somerset. Normal levels of rainfall over autumn and winter will not be enough to counteract the effects of the drought, which was extended to cover Yorkshire this month. Officials have calculated there will need to be 120 per cent of long-term average rainfall over the next six months for a nationwide recovery.

The world is getting more of its electricity from renewables but less from nuclear power. If the world is to reduce its carbon emissions and tackle climate change, it needs to move away from fossil fuels to low-carbon power. There are two key sources of low-carbon electricity: renewables — which include solar, wind, hydropower and others — and nuclear power. While rapid growth in solar and wind has increased the amount of electricity coming from renewables, a lack of enthusiasm for nuclear means it’s playing a shrinking role in the global mix. In the chart, you can see the share of global electricity coming from fossil fuels, renewables, and nuclear since 1985. Since 2000, nuclear and renewables have followed very different trajectories. Back then, both accounted for a similar share of global electricity. But in 2025, renewables made up more than three times as much: 34% compared to 9%. The total amount of electricity produced by nuclear plants is about the same as it was two decades ago. But because the world produces much more electricity overall, its share of the electricity mix has declined. (written by @_HannahRitchie and @parriagadap)

Gent in classes has a proper rant against Andy Burnham's Labour's decision to approve Jackdraw saying, "I think it climate vandalism, a surrender to t he fossil fuel giants" He then slams Jim Ratcliffe who closed down factories in the UK and has invested instead in drilling in the Gulf of Mexico He then slams the argument that it will help with our energy security pointing out that renewables are the way to protect our nation's energy security My view: That is the contradiction at the heart of Burnham’s decision: asking Britain to accept more fossil fuel extraction in the name of security, while the country remains exposed to global gas prices and the climate damage that comes with burning it. Jackdaw is no shield against another international price shock. Even at peak output, it is expected to supply only around 4% of Britain’s daily gas demand, and it will not bring household bills down. It gives the fossil fuel industry another project; it does not give Britain control over the price of gas. And when Jim Ratcliffe is closing British factories while investing in offshore drilling, we should ask whose interests this model of “energy security” really serves. The durable answer is to reduce our exposure to fossil fuels: build renewables, storage and grid capacity here at home. The sun and wind do not have to pass through a strait, depend on a foreign government, or arrive with a global price tag.

🚨This is the energy dilemma in one newspaper page. Shell and BP are heading for c. $17.6bn of quarterly profits as Iran/Hormuz crisis drives oil prices higher. Consumers pay more 👉Oil companies make more. Meanwhile Britain is increasingly dependent on imported energy bc domestic North Sea production has been allowed to decline. So the answer cannot simply be tax everything that moves or leave everything to the market. We need a strategic settlement. Tax genuine windfall profits fairly. But also make it worthwhile to invest in domestic production during the transition, build renewables, storage and grid capacity, and reduce our exposure to geopolitical shocks. Because importing more energy does not make Britain greener, it just makes Britain more dependent. Energy security is national security.

The Conservatives are promising 50,000 new prison places. To put this into perspective, this is the same party that managed a net increase of about 500 in fourteen years.
Criminals should be behind bars, not released early because prisons are full. We have a plan to build 50,000 new prison places and end Labour’s early release.
