Globalism was never a description of how human beings actually behave. It was a prescription for how its architects believed they should behave, enforced through institutional capture, demographic management and the moral denunciation of anyone who pointed to the evidence.
The evidence has not changed. Human nature has not changed. The nation state did not emerge because politicians invented it. It emerged because people, across every culture and every century, organised themselves around shared identity and defended it. That instinct is not the problem. Pretending it does not exist is.
The Border Is Not the Problem. It Is the Answer.
Globalism rests on a single assumption. That human beings, given the right institutions and sufficient time, will subordinate their deepest loyalties to nation, faith, language and kin in favour of a set of universal values administered from above. It is the most ambitious political project in human history. It is also the most consistently refuted by the evidence of human behaviour across every century we have recorded.
The border did not create conflict. Conflict created the border. Every boundary line on the political map of the world is the sediment of a dispute, a war, a negotiation, a defeat or a demographic reality that proved too stubborn to dissolve. The Congress of Vienna tried to redraw them rationally in 1815. The Treaty of Versailles tried again in 1919. The United Nations has been trying since 1945. Each attempt produced not stability but the conditions for the next eruption. Borders are not arbitrary impositions on an otherwise harmonious humanity. They are the hard-won acknowledgement that humanity is not harmonious.
The religious dimension alone should settle the argument. The three great Abrahamic faiths have been in structural conflict for fourteen hundred years. Not occasionally. Not as a result of misunderstanding that better dialogue might resolve. Structurally, because each makes an absolute claim to truth that the others cannot accommodate without ceasing to be what they are. Christianity, Islam and Judaism have coexisted. They have traded, tolerated and at moments admired each other. They have not, in fourteen centuries, resolved the fundamental incompatibility at their cores. No supranational institution has altered that by a single degree. The EU has not. The UN has not. The International Criminal Court has not. The World Trade Organisation has not. The incompatibility predates every one of them and will outlast every one of them.
Europe is the test case globalism chose for itself, and it is failing it. The conditions were as favourable as they will ever be. A shared continent. A shared post-war trauma. A broadly common cultural inheritance rooted in Christian civilisation, Roman law and Greek philosophy. Eighty years of institutional architecture. If globalism cannot hold under those conditions, the case for its universality collapses. And it is not holding. It is fracturing under the first serious combination of demographic pressure and economic stress it has encountered. Electorates from Stockholm to Rome to Warsaw are reasserting national interest against supranational obligation. They are not doing so out of ignorance. They are doing so because the nation state, for all its failures, remains the only political unit in human history that has successfully commanded the loyalty, the sacrifice and the democratic participation of its citizens.
Britain is the sharpest illustration. Three decades of managed borders policy, conducted under the ideological assumption that national identity was an obstacle to progress, has produced not a more harmonious society but a more fractured one. Communities that do not share a language, a legal tradition, a conception of the relationship between faith and state, or a common understanding of the rights of women have been placed in proximity and told that proximity is integration.
