Allow me to educate:
Without Jordan, the Scottie Pippen-led Bulls won 55 games. Impressive.
But wins without context don’t tell the whole story.
With Jordan: three straight NBA championships.
Without Jordan: 55 wins and a second-round exit.
That’s not proof the Bulls were just as good without MJ. That’s a massive drop-off from a three-peat to being eliminated before the conference finals.
And we actually got to see Scottie as the alpha. In the 1994 playoffs, when Phil Jackson drew up the final shot for Toni Kukoč instead of Pippen, Scottie refused to re-enter the game. Kukoč hit the game-winner anyway.
Pippen was an all-time great player. But the idea that the Bulls would have won those championships with Scottie leading the way and without Jordan is pure fantasy.
We don’t have to guess what the ceiling looked like with Scottie as the No. 1.
We saw it.
