🚨Joe O’Cearuill JJ Gabriel’s father on his conversation with Michael Carrick and Jason Wilcox over Manchester United’s contract offer:
🗣️ Joe O’Cearuill: “I had a very honest conversation with Michael Carrick and Jason Wilcox about JJ’s future, and I think some people at Manchester United will be angry when they hear why we said no.
But I’m his father before I’m anybody’s friend at a football club.
JJ is 16 years old.
We are not going to make a decision about his future because of the Manchester United badge alone.
I asked them one simple question.
‘Where exactly do you see JJ playing?’
There was a pause.
And that pause told me a lot.
I said, ‘You want him to stay, but you can’t give me a clear pathway. You can’t tell me when he becomes part of the first team.’
JJ doesn’t want to spend years being told he is one of the best young players at Manchester United while waiting for someone to decide when he is ready.
He wants responsibility.
He wants competition.
Most importantly, he wants a pathway.
The contract discussion became serious.
Our proposal was a £5 million signing package, with performance bonuses taking it beyond £8 million, alongside a clear development pathway.
We also wanted regular first-team training and a defined number of senior appearances once he reached the appropriate age.
Manchester United weren’t prepared to agree to those terms.
Real Madrid were.
And that changed everything for me.
I told Carrick, ‘This isn’t about who pays the most money. It’s about who is prepared to make a commitment to my son’s development.’
‘If you want him to stay, show us where he fits.’
‘Don’t tell me he has potential. Tell me what you’re going to do with it.’
Michael was respectful, but I understood there were limitations.
He has a squad to manage.
Jason has a club to manage.
But I have a 16-year-old whose next decision could shape the next ten years of his career.
Then Real Madrid came into the picture.
Their message was different.
They didn’t say, ‘Come here and wait.’
They said, ‘Come here and compete.’
They were prepared to meet the financial package, accept the bonuses and give us a much clearer pathway toward senior football.
That mattered enormously.
I told United, ‘If you cannot give him what another club is willing to give him, you cannot be surprised when he chooses the other club.’
This isn’t disrespect toward Manchester United.
But Manchester United cannot expect every talented young player to stay forever because of the history of the shirt.
History matters.
Ambition matters too.
JJ wants to play for the biggest clubs in the world.
And when Real Madrid tell my 16-year-old son they believe he can become one of their players, I have to take that seriously.
Some people will say he should have stayed.
Some will say he is too young.
Some United fans will be furious.
I understand that.
But I would rather people be angry with our decision today than JJ wake up at 20 and ask why I didn’t fight harder for his career.
We didn’t reject Manchester United because we don’t respect the club.
We rejected the proposal because we didn’t believe it was the best one for JJ.
Real Madrid showed more ambition.
They showed more clarity.
And they were willing to put their money behind their words.
JJ is only 16.
He has a lot to learn.
But he also has huge ambition.
I’m not going to apologize for protecting that.
Manchester United had the opportunity to convince us.
They didn’t.
Real Madrid did.
So now JJ is going to Madrid to compete.
Not to be Cristiano Ronaldo.
Not to be Jude Bellingham.
Not to be anybody else.
To become JJ Gabriel.
And if Manchester United fans are angry, I understand.
But my responsibility isn’t to make Manchester United fans happy.
My responsibility is to make sure my son gets the best opportunity to become the footballer he believes he can be.”
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The long quote attributed to JJ Gabriel's father is fabricated with no supporting evidence from credible sources. Reporting confirms Real Madrid interest and general talks over a pathway but contains none of these details or verbatim comments.

Pepe: im trying to clear the ball to get us out of this
Ronaldo: then give me the ball.
HOLY FUCKING AURA
🚨 Pepe tears up explaining the feeling of playing behind Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal:
“I remember a game when we were under pressure and I cleared a ball without looking. It came straight back.
“Cristiano turned round and said, ‘Pepe, give me something I can chase.’
“I said, ‘I’m trying to get us out.’
“He said, ‘Then give it to me.’
“I laughed afterwards because he was asking me to pick a pass while I had a striker trying to take my head off. But the next time I won it, I looked. He was already moving. I put it down the channel and suddenly their defenders were running towards their own goal.
“That was a wonderful feeling as a centre-back. You’ve spent five minutes defending your box, shouting, getting your body in front of things, and then you hear the crowd because Cristiano has the ball. You can finally step up. You can breathe.
“He gave me a lot of those breaths.
“People will remember his goals against Sweden. I remember what it felt like at the other end when the match became difficult. You look up the pitch and he’s still making the run. You’re tired, he’s tired, everybody knows where the pass is going, and he still wants you to try it.
“I used to ask him, ‘How do you know I can get it there?’
“He’d say, ‘You got it there before.’
“Sometimes that was all the encouragement you needed. He remembered the good pass you’d made, even when you were thinking about the last one you’d given away.
“And then there was France in 2016. When he had to come off, I looked at him and knew how much it was hurting. We’d spoken about winning something for Portugal for so many years. Now we were in the final and he couldn’t stay on the pitch.
“I remember thinking we had to give him a game he could bear to watch.
“That became difficult as well, because every time you looked towards the touchline he was trying to come back on without actually coming back on. I thought, ‘Cristiano, please. We can only listen to one coach.’
“I kept thinking about what it would be like to walk back into that dressing room if we lost. You can tell your friend you gave everything, and he’ll believe you. But you also know he’d give anything to have been out there helping you. I wanted us to come back with something he could hold.
“When Eder scored, I still had defending to do. People watching at home could jump up and celebrate. I was looking at the clock and trying to get everybody back where they needed to be. Every ball into our box felt like it had been in the air for a minute.
“Then it was over. For once, I could look towards Cristiano without having to look straight back at the pitch. I’d spent years wanting him to get on the end of something. That night I just wanted to get over to him.
“Even now, when I see the photographs, I remember how difficult it was to say anything properly. You start a sentence, somebody grabs you, then you see another teammate crying and you forget what you were trying to say. We’d imagined winning that trophy so many times. None of those conversations had prepared me for actually giving him a hug when it happened.
“But when we lifted that trophy, I wanted him in the middle of everything. He’d helped get us to that night. And I knew the boy who’d wanted to win for Portugal was still there inside the man holding the cup.
“Today somebody asked me what Portugal will miss most. There are so many football answers. The movement, the heading, the way he could turn a clearance into a chance. I’ll probably think of another one tomorrow.
“Right now I’m thinking about the next time Portugal are defending a lead and somebody wins the ball near their own box. For years, before I even had it under control, I knew I’d hear him asking for it.
“I’ll be watching from home. I think part of me will still look up to see where he’s running.”
