🛰️🪨After 2 years in deep space, ESA's Hera mission for planetary defence is closing in on its target - Dimorphos, the 1st object in the Solar System to have had its orbit changed by human action, when NASA's DART impacted it in 2022

That's an interesting concept for an animation.

Hera is now 1.2 km (less than a mile) away from the Didymos/Dimorphos system. The mission will gather important follow-up info on the effects of DART on Dimorphos, info that can inform any actual attempts to deflect an Earthbound asteroid.
Our Hera spacecraft can now see Didymos and Dimorphos as two separate asteroids! Coming closer, it will study the effects of NASA's 2022 DART impact and help advance asteroid deflection as a planetary defence technique. The first detailed images of Dimorphos are expected on 25 November. Follow Hera’s journey with the Hera Space Companion 👉 hera.esa.int 🔗esa.int/Space_Safety/Hera/Fi…

Did we find a new dwarf planet? @VRubinObs has revealed a new dwarf planet candidate that orbits our Sun beyond Pluto! And it may be among the largest and brightest objects discovered in this region of the Solar System: stanford.io/4exr85u

I took about 50,000 photos through a 14" telescope last night to produce this: A hyper-detailed photo of the full moon. The fidelity of the photo was great enough to allow me to greatly enhance the color, revealing a hidden world of geological diversity.

One of the biggest mysteries of the Wow! Signal is its exact location, with two possible positions in the sky. Our #AreciboWow team has solved this mystery using three independent methods. We’ll present our findings in 2027. We know! 😉

🌍✨ Our Entire World, Seen From the Moon From the lunar surface, Earth shines like a brilliant blue jewel suspended in the endless darkness of space. That distant world holds every ocean, every forest, every human life, and every story ever told. From so far away, our differences disappear, leaving one extraordinary truth: everything we call home exists on that beautiful blue planet. A breathtaking reminder of just how precious our place in the universe truly is. 🌕💙

Today in 1965, Atlas-Agena launched to put the Agena target vehicle into orbit for rendezvous with Gemini 6. When the Agena target failed to reach orbit, the launch of Gemini 6 had to be postponed.

Strength matters, even for planets. A recent simulation gave Theia, the body thought to have hit Earth and formed the Moon, realistic strength. Hot but solid, it made an intact Moon directly. Colder and stronger, it made the classic debris disk. doi.org/10.3847/2041-8213/ae…

Also last night, Ship 45 was evicted from MB-2, into the ring yard, where she remains. I expect Ship 44 to be moved to the centre stand, while S43 and S42 should exchange places at Massey's during tonight's transport move, for S42's Static Fire test. @LabPadre
