"The Work of Politics: Making a Democratic Welfare State" out now with Cambridge University Press. Here's my overview of the argument in @jacobinmag:

Spend trillions of dollars building supercomputers-->revolutionise blue sky scientific research-->discover most people want free recipes and companies just need dumb models that write emails-->crash the global economy.
Maybe I'm in a bubble, but no one in my lefty political economy/political theory world hasn't engaged seriously with Hayek and Schumpeter, isn't sorta obsessed with the calculation debate, and doesn't know Nozick's arguments well.
Reposting this banger from @ContraPoints.
Leftists overestimate themselves massively. They're not nearly as eclectically well-read as they think they are.

Lottocracy is all the rage among political philosophers, but it’s natural to be uneasy about an untried system. Advocates cite successful real-world mini-publics as evidence. How much confidence should these give us? I examine this in my latest paper:
onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
A) this seems to massively exaggerate the roll of a WhatsApp group in Lula's win
B) PT is less robust but it is a paradigmatic non-hyperpolitics mass party of the sort we've supposedly lost
C) they won one of the most significant elections for democracy in Brazil's history
More typical democrat elitism. Imposing their values on the rest of America. Universal charcuteries only resonates on the coasts.

That's not true. Most Americans have seen and consumed cheese.
Cheesecake maybe is more niche.
Most Americans have barely seen cheese, let alone a cheesecake. A factory that produces cheesecakes would appear almost like a miracle. This is why the Dems are so out of touch with America.
Ah yes that great practice of demanding all Muslims denounce all acts of islamic terrorism, we should definitely expand that logic and not challenge it

You and your Jewish daughter should just be open and say you don't support the #genocide just like Muslims had to say they didn't support #911 or the Manchester attacks etc.
Israel claiming it acts for all Jews is driving some #Antisemitism

I personally have not gotten a chance to look at the anti-Semitism report but both my children have experienced clear and aggressive antisemitism in their school life, even more so when the war broke out. My daughter is afraid to tell people she's Jewish.
They didn't know what yom Kippur was and only relented when we showed them the local councils list of approved religious holidays b

This is how it has always been BTW. People like this with zero artistic creativity or talent DETEST people who can create.
It makes all the sense in the world to me that these guys would rather listen to AI slop than be in awe of a talent they'll never achieve.
My quick googling indicates that the accounting model they're using here doesn't say discount uncertain taxes by 50% but for accounting purposes only included taxes benefits that have a higher than 50% chance of being realised.

Zucman also takes issue with the 50% litigation-survival assumption we use in the paper, as he is seemingly confused about where we obtained the figure. We advise him to actually read the paper.
We explicitly disclose this as a modeling parameter, which was informed by the Financial Accounting Standards Board’s guidance on uncertain tax provisions (i.e., ASC 740-10).
Considering litigation effects should not come as a surprise to a tax economist. The Joint Committee on Taxation similarly considers “compliance, administration, and enforcement issues that could affect the timing or amounts of revenues collected” when scoring a tax bill. 10/14
