taste has a scarcity problem. a model can learn to reproduce a beautiful aesthetic, then make it so common that it stops feeling like a distinctive choice. nothing has changed but the supply. if part of taste comes from finding something others haven’t found yet, a universally “tasteful” default starts consuming its own advantage. i wonder whether a model should notice when its best answer has become everyone’s answer. when distinctiveness matters, candidate ranking could combine quality and user preference with a style similarity penalty against a rolling sample of recent outputs. the hard part would be distinguishing aesthetic repetition from conventions that make a design usable. a choice could keep scoring well in isolation while ranking lower as the system makes its visual language more common. the model’s own output distribution would become part of the objective.

Every 12 months, I have a day of peace and steadiness and positivity. I walk into the office, I hug my teammates and tell them to have a great day. I have one cup of coffee only and it’s at least 30 minutes after I wake up and expose my skin and eyes to direct sunlight. I meditate during lunch, unguided. I don’t use all caps or curse on slack. In fact, I use emojis. I eat quinoa for lunch and I love it. I talk about carbon credits and Kamala Harris. Nothing phases me. I give people the benefit of the doubt. I love people who ride Lyft bikes. Berkeley is where the conversation is really happening. I prove to people I can do it.
Grey pill truth nuke. If you are a very calm and steady person, it behooves you to flip out and make a scene once every 12-18 months so people know you have it in you. And because it's so out of character, people will take it way more seriously than a histrionic drama type flipping out.

what’s incredible is all the space that is being taken up in my husband’s brain by knowing every world capital so that when we are in an uber together at 730 in the morning on the way to work he can bond with the driver by whipping out a Ljubljana or Bishkek or Asmara and then pretending like he has a cousin living there working in logistics or whatever and I’m just trying to fucking listen to chamath

The first step to becoming technical is identifying as technical so that’s what I’m doing now.
