Not a poem today just a painting. A painting of one of the very few pics of the MERT aircraft. Pictures were never taken on this aircraft, this was from a professional photographer documenting what the team did for history more than anything. The MERT aircraft was a sanctioned space, a place of respect, utmost professionalism, intense emotion, and danger. But that aircraft taught me more about love and loss than I had ever known before. #lestweforget

Long post worth the read. I have a close friend who flies private jets. He flew Lear 60 for over 15 years and now flies a Gulfstream. This is a copy and paste of his response to me asking him if he thought Ice was the issue. “We always fly in ridiculous cold temperatures.” “Usually you get the bad ice when the temperatures are like 0 to negative 20. Believe it or not, there's a point where it gets too cold for ice. At negative 40, you pretty much can't get ice. Besides that, the airplane is equipped with hot wings and hot tail.” “I flew the Lear 60 for like 15 years. It's a no joke airplane and probably the most dangerous airplane I've ever flown. It has a super critical wing. The airflow has to be perfect. When it gets into rough air and turbulence, it will easily stall. It has stalled on me at 41,000 feet just because we got into some turbulence. (On the way to Palm Beach as a matter of fact. ) we recovered and got her flying again around 30,000 ft. Scary But here's the problem. This airplane has a terrible coffin corner. (At high altitudes) what that means is, you fly in a really narrow window where if you lose 20 knots, it stalls. And if you gain 20 knots, it goes into overspeed. The air goes supersonic over the wing and it goes into a high speed stall, or worse, a Mach tuck. So if you stall, the normal recovery is to push the yoke forward to lower the nose and gain air speed again. At low altitude, you can push really hard and recover quickly. But in the 60... if you push hard, it will gain air speed and go into a high speed stall, it doesn't take much. It's very sensitive. The 60 has super short wings that don't make much lift. So then you high speed stall, and the computer is yelling at you... OVERSPEED! So then you pull back and enter a low speed stall. And you go back and forth trying to keep it in the air speed window. This whole thing is pretty scary. And you should recover basically by using your finger tips using super small corrections. You can't over do it. If you try to muscle the recovery, she gets mad and will become unrecoverable. If she enters a mach tuck. You're done.” “I taught the Lear 60 to other pilots and mentored them. I told them... this airplane has a soul and it's trying to kill you. Do not ever try to top the weather. Don't go over a thunderstorm. Go around it. If it means a half hour longer, then do it. Going over the thunderstorm will go into turbulence that you might not recover from. These pilots went right over a thunderstorm. I think it stalled which caused them to drop down into the thunderstorm and ended up in mach tuck. They picked up so much speed that it ripped off the horizontal stabilizer. At that point... chuck Yeager can't fix it. These same pilots did something similar a couple months ago. ATC got mad at them. They poked the bear one too many times. This is not a beginner airplane. The Gulfstream would never do this. It has HUGE margins of error and won't stall like that. But then again... it's got HUGE wings. It's a pussy cat. The Gulfstream is like driving a 4 wheeler. The Lear 60 is like riding a uni cycle.”

Waking up this morning in Atlanta, I’m appalled by what has unfolded since my original post about the shocking audio from the Learjet 60 crash in Florida yesterday. Missile strikes. DEI conspiracies. People inventing increasingly ludicrous explanations and presenting them as fact while investigators are barely beginning their work. The ignorance is staggering. But it’s the treatment of this young co-pilot, including by people purporting to be aviation professionals, that I find utterly sickening. Her gender, her fear and her final words have become ammunition for misogyny and ridicule. That’s wrong on so many levels. I hear a pilot facing something that would terrify any of us, still communicating with air traffic control until the final moments. Thousands of hours in a logbook, or our gender, don’t make us immune to fear, nor allow us to understand everything happening in that cockpit from a few radio calls. And now, even the measured voices asking for evidence, patience and compassion are themselves receiving hate. What has this platform become when even asking for basic human decency invites abuse. I expect better from our profession and humans in general. Seeing people who should know better join this grotesque pile-on leaves me deeply disappointed and disgusted. My heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of everyone lost. Behind every headline and recording are people whose lives have been shattered. They deserve compassion, dignity and answers. Not this.

The Garden of Remembrance @RNSubMuseum in Gosport, Hampshire. Nearly 6000 British submariners who have died in service since 1901 are remembered here. Three olives trees feature in the garden - they are 125 years old, the same age as the Royal Navy Submarine Service. ⚓️ #SM125

Hello @Aberdeenshire your alarm on Balmedie Quarry offices has been sounding since the staff left on Friday at 5pm. It sounds, resets and sounds. I've tried calling @PoliceScotland @PSOSAbershire as per your website for out of hours but their hold is 30 minutes plus.

Not a story apparently
Nigeria.

The most amazing, heart-breaking, dramatic start to any documentary series ever. TV at its finest.
31 October 1973. 1st episode of the 26-part classic ITV documentary series World at War was broadcast. It was narrated by Laurence Olivier with music by Carl Davies. It cost £900,000 (worth £11 million today).

Britain formerly apologised in 1840. That was during the same period the Royal Navy had an entire squadron off Western Africa dedicated to capturing slave ships & freeing slaves. Also, intermittently off East Africa. Also, during the same period the Foreign Office was trying to lobby African Kingdoms to give up slavery - many often resistant, resulting in gun-boat diplomacy.
The reason Britain struggles with even a formal apology for transatlantic slavery is the legal implications. Admission strengthens the case for reparation claims. Britain paid several billions in compensation to the slave owners in its slave colonies. Its ex-slaves got nothing.

“Down this road the soldiers came.” Superb series, which gets better with age as one realises just how pivotal, how historic, were many of the now long-gone interviewees.

I'm not sure what posing directions Captain Console gave to Sergeant Baxter, PR Company, ATS, but it's the same look that my cat gives me when she doesn't like the food I've just put down for her. IWM (H 21204), Armando Console, WO Official Photographer, 10 July 1942.
