We frequently see Leftists (like @ZackPolanski or @BernieSanders ) whining about wealth distribution but as anybody who has started a business knows, the important thing is growing the size of the pie, not what your proportion is. Would you rather own 50% of a £1 million company or 1% of a £1 billion company? Try and equalise wealth distribution and all that happens is the pie doesn’t grow. Nobody is struggling because someone else is a billionaire. You are struggling because endless government intervention (and the corrupt cronyism it breeds) is a massive drag on growing the size of the pie.

Maastricht is when everything started to unravel for Brussels. The British people weren’t given a vote on the most significant constitutional change in the country’s modern history. Ironically, it is arch-remoaner John Major who therefore laid the key foundation for Brexit, by forcing the UK into a governance structure that didn’t meet British people’s democratic standards, or the belief many held in a more laissez-faire state. The bureaucratic, stifling, undemocratic nature of the EU is now on full show. Only a fanatic or paid agent of the project would deny it today. Eurosceptic parties are leading polls across Europe. In many instances, those parties are only being kept out of power by broad pro-EU coalitions cooked up in Brussels that don’t agree on much besides their unwavering faith in the EU. When that strategy fails, the EU executive interferes directly. Cancelling elections as in Romania, or by withholding billions in funding from the very taxpayers who sent that money to Brussels in the first place, as in Hungary or Poland. Here the game is particularly crude and thuggish: vote for the people we approve, and only then will we give you your money back. If that also fails, the EU elite are now also reverting to lawfare, as seen in France and Germany. Voters in the two most important EU countries are now awake to the EU’s many failings, and the bigwigs in Paris, Berlin and Brussels are scared. But rather than listen to voters discontent, admit to mistakes, or offer to rethink European governance going forward and perhaps curtail the EU’s insatiable and disastrous thirst for power, legal means are used to try and ban candidates and parties that don’t toe the Brussels line. The project is thus drawing the inevitable conclusions that all institutions with great power but little public support take: 🔊 The people are wrong. 🔊 Their favourite politicians must be assets of an enemy power. 🔊 We must control media, speech and democracy to protect the people from themselves. This is endgame strategy though, and it is incredibly dangerous. But because the EU elite are surrounded by “yes” men and a largely subservient media, many don’t connect the dots as I am doing here. The scary reality isn’t being properly acknowledged, and so the establishment sees no reason to backdown. The hubris is dialled up to eleven. The emperor is stark bollock naked, and yet nobody dare tell him it’s time to get off the stage. As a consequence, voters continue to flood away from the old dominant European parties in their millions, but those parties are fully integrated into the EU project and the thousands of well paid jobs that the EU ecosystem funds. So, and this is the really dangerous part, if power won’t admit they are getting things badly wrong, and won’t allow people outside of their club to gain power in Brussels or in European capitals, the elite running the project has no choice but to turn against the people themselves, to defend the institutions that granted them their wealth and status. This is how so many big political projects collapsed in the past, and it’s hard to see today why the EU should be any different. Let’s hope some sensible people at the top are aware of this and actively considering ways to get Europe out of this quagmire that don’t involve authoritarianism and the end of democratic freedom.
The day the EU, as we know it today, was born. 🇪🇺 On 1 November 1993, the Maastricht Treaty entered into force, officially establishing the European Union, formerly the European Communities. Happy birthday to us! 💙

For the first time: The pilots who landed the Flydubai flight have been revealed. They entered the cockpit after the Indian pilot, Sumit Machhar, was attacked with an axe during an attempted suicide attack. They managed to land the Boeing in Saudi Arabia, despite part of its tail having been broken off. Following a commendation ceremony in the UAE—where they were honored alongside Machhar—the pilots' names have been disclosed: Hanson Stephen from Fiji and Rowan Toth from South Africa. "They acted with heroism and composure."

Emma Reynolds, a Labour Treasury Minister, has just said on Camilla Tominey’s show on GB News ‘I don’t think employers are working people, they are companies’ Is she for real?! How gobsmackingly lacking in any real world or business understanding. My dad - like hundreds of thousands of small business owners - was an employer ….and very much a working person! Emma Reynolds has just kicked every small business owner in the country and shown Labour’s true colours. This lot are not fit to be in government.

Another reason that I will be cancelling my Telegraph subscription on Monday. Not just the departure of Allison Pearson, Liam Halligan, Sherelle Jacobs and other fine journalists but because of this: The new owners (Springer) require ALL employees to SUPPORT A UNITED EUROPE OR THEY SHOULD LEAVE. If they think for a moment that I am paying money for THAT, they are very much mistaken. I think their cancellation phone lines ☎️ are going to be VERY BUSY on Monday.

What an extraordinary statement. Apparently, according to Labour, employers aren't working people. Tell that to the small business owners working 60-hour weeks, risking their savings, paying their staff and keeping their businesses afloat. Labour can play with definitions and indulge in endless whataboutery, but it cannot escape the consequences of its decisions. Taxing employers affects jobs, wages and the very people Labour claims to protect.

I have massive amounts of respect and sympathy for the patriotic people of Poland at this time. 🇵🇱 But I have to say it. They should never have joined the EU in the first place. You can’t serve two masters. And now they need to leave it as soon as possible.

A lot of us were very willing to have a debate without heat, @stonewalluk, and the reason that never happened wasn't because gender critical feminists didn't want one. While we were trying to get you to listen to our concerns, your former CEO was telling a BBC boss that gay people not wanting to include the opposite sex in their dating pool was 'sexual racism'. While we were pointing out the homophobia inherent in gender ideology, Stonewall ambassador Alex Drummond (a bearded, heterosexual man who'd had no surgery and taken no cross-sex hormones but liked wearing skirts), was going into schools to talk to students about his 'lesbian' identity. @BluskyeAllison, who actually is a lesbian, was subject to unlawful discrimination at her place of work for tweeting: ‘Stonewall recently hired Morgan Page, a male bodied person who ran workshops with the sole aim of coaching heterosexual men who identify as lesbians on how they can coerce young lesbians into having sex with them. Page called [it] “overcoming the cotton ceiling”.’ When the UK Supreme Court upheld women's right to single sex spaces, you issued a statement expressing your unhappiness about the ruling. In her report on your unhappy influence at the University of Essex, you were found by barrister @akuareindorf to have misrepresented the law as it related to women's rights: '[Stonewall have] stated the law as Stonewall would prefer it to be, rather than the law as it is’. In 2018, you publicly advised schools to shred a research pack saying there were risks to puberty blockers, in spite of the fact that you aren't a medical charity and that there was already credible evidence that puberty blockers are neither irreversible nor harm-free. Meanwhile you produced your own educational packs, recommending a children's book, for ages 5-9, in which the parent 'is neither a man, nor a woman – they’re non-binary.' In July 2022, Stonewall sent out a tweet that read ‘Research suggests that children as young as two recognise their trans identity'. @thetimes has reported how you've sought to control the language used by NHS trusts and government on their social-media accounts. Organisations would get points from you for replacing commonly understood words with ideologically approved terms, eg, 'birthing parent' instead of 'mother'. thetimes.com/uk/society/arti… In short, you took a maximalist position on gender identity ideology, which you attempted to enforce by diktat. You refused to acknowledge that you'd hitched your wagon to a cause that, unlike civil rights, gay rights or women's rights, sought to strip rights from others. You sought to curtail everyone's right to freedom of speech and belief by controlling what it was permissible to think and say, through the management and political class. You have argued against women's and girl's rights to their own spaces, their sports and to assemble without men. Your former CEO tried to shame gay women/men into dating the opposite sex if the latter claimed to be female/male. Your mantra was 'no debate' because, like all totalitarians, you preferred slogans, bullying and infiltration of powerful institutions to talking to opponents. You appear to have had no concern for the lowly people your ideology was harming: gender confused kids, female rape victims, female prisoners, regular people hounded and investigated at their places of work for refusing to accept the new mandates on sex and gender issued from on high. Your 'activism' has been a disaster for those trans-identified people who really do just want to get on with their lives in peace. You have besmirched the name of an organisation many of us were once proud to donate to, the charity that was partly responsible for securing the legal right of gay people to marry, which a lot of us thought would never happen in our lifetimes. The milquetoast words quoted below do not erase a decade of gender activism that has been disastrous not only for individuals but for society as a whole. There was once a debate to be had, but until you acknowledge the direct harm you've caused, it is no more possible to debate you than to persuade a person in the throes of a drug-induced psychosis that they are not, in fact, the reincarnated Christ.

What is the Polish constitution worth if the unelected European Commission decides what must happen?

Another chart to show the declining importance of UK goods exports to the EU – a trend that began well before Brexit, It shows that UK goods exports to the EU have been falling as a share of UK GDP since at least 2000, which further undermines the case for rejoining... 🤔

Liam Halligan is one of those strange beasts - a phenomenal brain with enormous curiosity, littl cynicism bags of enthusiasm and always, always a kind word and thoughts for many people around him. You can tell most things about a person by how they treat someone who’s “not important for their career or advancement” As well as being a brilliant economist he has straddled the old world of newspapers into this new media arena. He manages to make complicated issues understandable - the opposite of academy-speak and the obscurantist snobs - and he is thoroughly one of us - a man of the people, an Everyman whose fierce intellect is matched by passion for fair play This is such a loss for @Telegraph and along with @AllisonPearson I have seen so many cancelling subscriptions now Even in this announcement @LiamHalligan is dignified, or as some of us might say, a proper fella. The new owners at Telegraph seem hell bent on turning it into an EU light ents rag Liam and Allison doing any podcast will be massively well received. If we could have him as chancellor things would be much better too….
I was hoping to be able to announce this in my own time – but the media rumour mill is swirling, I'm being contacted by various reporters and others, and I don't like denying the truth, so ... I wrote my first "Economic Agenda" column in The Sunday Telegraph 27 years ago, under the editorship of Dominic Lawson – filling-in occasionally during the late-1990s, before being given my own weekly slot from 2003. Since then, while I've been heavily involved in television, and am perhaps better known as a broadcaster, penning "Economic Agenda" for The Sunday Telegraph each week has been the backbone of my journalistic life. On Thursday, the @Telegraph rang to tell me my column is being scrapped. I was asked, and have agreed, to write "Economic Agenda" until the end of November, as per my contract. After that, my Sunday Telegraph column will be no more. Why this decision has been made, and whether or not my columns were any good, is for others to judge. All I will say is that, as the first person in my family to attend university, sustaining a weekly column in a leading national newspaper for a quarter of a century has been a source of enormous pride for myself and my family. Lots of people have been asking me about the future of "Planet Normal" - the hugely-popular Telegraph podcast which I co-created and co-present with the brilliant @AllisonPearson "Planet Normal" has, over the last 330 weekly episodes, also become a major part of my professional life and my broader identity. With Allison reportedly leaving the Telegraph as well, there is a lot of speculation about whether or not the podcast will continue to impart "news and views from beyond the bubble" with our usual blend of sharp analysis, humour and occasional outrage ! Well, I am delighted to confirm that Co-Pilot Pearson and myself are deeply committed to our joint podcast – and, above all, to our beloved listeners. We will, as and when notice periods allow, continue our voyages through space every Thursday – perhaps to "Planet Normal", or maybe to another part of the solar system – so we can "gaze down each week at the madness of Planet Earth", as we have done since the Spring of 2020. So citizens of Planet Normal, stand ready ! The "rocket-of-right-thinking", the "flying refuge of reasoned views", will soon be launched once again 🚀🪐👨‍🏭👱‍♀️🎙️📺 I poured my heart and soul into "Economic Agenda" and "Planet Normal". The Telegraph's decision to scrap them is obviously a huge personal blow. But I will always be grateful for the opportunities the paper has given me. Above all, I would like to thank the illustrious list of successive Telegraph business editors I've worked with since the late-1990s, many of whom have become and remain good friends - including @Peston @RobertsDan @larmitstead @neilbenet @benjaminmarlow @cg_williams @kamalahmednews @MarkKleinmanSky @jamesrquinn (sorry if I've forgotten anyone, it's been a long time!) On Friday, even though I almost always write my column from elsewhere, and despite being extremely disappointed by the paper's decision, I decided to go into the Telegraph and write today's column sitting in the newsroom. I am glad I did - as being at the heart of the paper at such a difficult time allowed for lots of conversations, with everyone from junior production staff to senior reporters and executives, which reminded me that journalism, despite being an industry at the whim of seemingly endless and often brutal commercial and technological upheaval, is not only hugely important to our country, but full of talented, decent people. See picture below, having just filed my piece, as I was heading out the door ...

Educate yourself Kay. Your lefty virtue-signalling about how bad our country’s history was may have been welcome on Sky News and at your Covid parties. But the truth is that slavery- indefensible as it was- was the norm many centuries ago. The Romans, the Egyptians, the Dutch and even the Africans themselves all took part in the brutal trade. And you should know that Brits were enslaved too. By the Romans, Irish, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and the Barbary cosairs. Your ignorance wouldn’t be much comfort for the women imprisoned for months in freezing, brutal conditions, taken from their families by raiders on the British Isles in the 11th century. If you need some help learning more, read my book, ‘Patriot: Empire, betrayal and hope’.
I’m sure your words would have been of great comfort to the women imprisoned for months in those stinking, cramped dungeons, taken out at the governor’s pleasure or left in the blistering sun without food or water if they resisted his advances, before being marched through the Door of No Return. 🇵🇱 A very disturbing claim has emerged during a broadcast on Polish television channel Polsat. Apparently, there were plans to deny President Karol Nawrocki's plane permission to land at a military airport in Warsaw. However, according to those who revealed the information, the military rebelled and refused to obey orders from above. If true, that's a level of interference that ticks every major box of being unlawful and undemocratic, and it cannot go unpunished.

Not one Media outlet has reported this detail about Guyana! Guyana produces over 900,000 barrels of oil a day and its economy grew by 19% in 2025. It has a national resource fund of over $3.3 billion and its public debt is just 27.5% of GDP (fabulous) And this year to August, Britain has imported £1.2 BILLION of oil from Guyana. (So we can pretend we are saving the planet) That’s why we are sending grovelling Royals and the PM is crapping himself. You’re welcome.
