Railroad workers in the desert. Tracks reached Las Vegas for the first time in October 1904.
Salt Lake Tribune had this report two weeks later:
"In this little valley, heretofore one of the quietest and most remote portions of the Union, has suddenly sprung up a town of many hundred souls ... Camp followers of every undesirable kind have followed the graders and tracklayers and the natural result is immorality in the worst form. Saloons are everywhere and gambling is rife."
