The most RIDICULOUS workshop I’ve seen to date: “Navigating Racial Microagressions as a Grad Student”
aka: “Your profs/admin are 99% white & their racism is rampant but we won’t confront them about their racism & anti-racist pedagogy but here’s how you can try to endure.”
A5: poetry, letter-writing, journaling: forms that emphasize the writing process and self expression and where “making mistakes” or using non traditional language is ok #schmiteracies
A4: standards can be helpful to set what the bare minimum skills that should be achieved by the end of the year and ensure continuity across the subject over the course of several years. Harmful bc it emphasizes skills over the content #schmiteracies
A3: our ideas about being good at a content area come from our teachers and peers. What is praised in the classroom gets perpetuated. What awards us good grades too, like answering q’s using certain vocabulary and in a “logical”, academic format #schmiteracies
A2: schools value correctness bc they are given funding based on test scores. Teaching to a test creates a culture where this is prioritized. This benefits students who belong to dominant groups, whose literacies and knowledge are more likely to be represented #schmiteracies
A1: self expression in a social sciences class can look like giving students choice in the format or medium they want to present their ideas through #schmiteracies
People approach texts in a variety of ways with diff abilities and from diff perspectives and teachers should listen to students in figuring out how to support them in reading and communicating most effectively and authentically #schmiteracies
“Textual dexterity” means navigating between and through different literacies to communicate. This is a skill that can be developed into fluency and is important to cultivate in order to affirm the value of many ways of communicating #schmiteracies
Young people now understand and use digital tools to understand and carry out the social dynamics, communicating and learning. This now extends beyond school and to home and social spaces #schmiteracies
