I get the sentiment but fascism did nawt end in the 70s 😭😭😭 why do you think we have a king
Replying to @yurionfilm
After the film I researched the Civil War. I was baffled to find that fascism ended in the 70s. I thought it would have been abolished after WWII, but it was not. It is crazy, and it made me super sad that people had to live through this for all that time despite any efforts.

the reactions to la bola negra are so funny because one of the main criticisms it got in spain was that it overexplained everything and treated the audience like idiots only for it to come out in the us and americans to go like “they’re making us sympathise with a fascist!”
yessss when you completely change the context of a story the story itself and the message it carries changes too!!🤩🤩 you're so smart here have a cookie🍪🍪

This does not happen in the film. There is a moment you could twist into this reading if, I guess, you saw the film as someone who doesn't know Spanish and relied on mistranslated subtitles. But I doubt even AI-generated subs for a pirated rip would distort the text that much.
Did you want Sebastián to tell the fascists that he didn’t want to join their side while he’s being held at gunpoint and get himself killed after they bombed his village and killed his mother? :/

this is why i find many of the people criticizing la bola negra disingenuous and ignorant. spanish fascists WON the war, franco stayed in power until his death. they were never punished or defeated. sebastián lived a miserable life full of pain and regret THAT'S THE POINT

the way he didn't get any consequences on being a fascist is truly pissed me off, why does he become the 'icon' of queer liberation

the fascists won the war and set up a dictatorship that lasted 40 fucking years until the dictator died peacefully in his bed i’m not sure what consequences you expect a fascist soldier to get in that country

🚨 Pablo Gavi is a serious option to replace the injured Rodri in the starting XI. He played there at the end of last season, when FC Barcelona secured the league title. [@JoanPoquiEraso]

man who gave the odyssey a five star rave review slanders film about centuries of queer repression and survival under fascism for “insisting on its own monumentality”
“La Bola Negra,” a new film by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, dramatizes gay repression and liberation across three interconnected stories. At first, the year is 1937 and viewers are thrust deep into the Spanish Civil War, where a Nationalist soldier and a wounded Republican freedom fighter exchange furtive glances. By the end, it’s 2017, and a Madrid-based historian need only look to Grindr to satisfy an urge. The movie “wants to be a sweeping historical epic of gay longing—a film about what it means to be a man who desires other men in times of war and peace,” Justin Chang writes. Instead, the directors have produced “a film that insists, arrogantly and aggressively, on its own monumentality”. Even compelling performances from Glenn Close, Penélope Cruz, and Lola Dueñas fail to rescue the extravagantly overwrought film. Read Chang's full review: newyorker.com/culture/the-cu…

I think the main problem with the missunderstandings around la bola negra in the us is that they're not concious that fascism won the war. We stayed in a fascist dictatorship for decades after it and those who aligned with Franco didn't find any retaliation cause they won

so many of the awful takes on la bola negra could be cut down if yall just googled spanish civil war before pressing post on your stupidities.
