As 2026 comes to a close, Sun Qian’s year-end reflection can be summed up in just three words: JUST RIGHT.
“Just right—not too much, not too little. Whether it’s mixing a cocktail or making a cup of coffee, being able to get it just right means you’re doing an amazing job. Right now, I feel that everything is just right.”

Now grown, Sun Qian has built a life of her own, with a career, friends, a beloved dog, and the everyday rhythms she enjoys. Yet she continues to jot down fragments of her thoughts and feelings. She says that love holds great importance for her.
One film she particularly enjoys is Project Hail Mary, a story about an unlikely bond between a space explorer and an alien. “I think it has such a childlike innocence to it. The dialogue is beautifully written, and it tells a story about love so well.”
She was also deeply moved by the much more sobering animated film My Love Affair with Marriage. Its protagonist is a girl raised in a traditional patriarchal environment. From her innocent youth through falling in love, entering two marriages, and eventually breaking free, she gradually liberates herself from the constraints imposed by her upbringing and the conventions of marriage and relationships, refusing to remain confined by prescribed ideologies.
“One line in particular left a deep impression on me: ‘She is a girl. She cannot fight. If she fights, then she is no longer a girl.’ The constraints placed on women are, in many ways, imposed on them from birth. There is something deeply ironic about that, yet also incredibly powerful.”
Her reflection offers a glimpse into Sun Qian's clear-eyed understanding of the world and the convictions that lie at her core.
As the year draws to a close, 2026 has brought Sun Qian not only the fulfillment of bringing new works and characters to life, but also a quieter, more personal kind of inner growth. Every year-end, she makes a habit of summing up the year in a single phrase. At the end of 2025, hers was, “There is always a way to figure things out.” This year, however, only three words come to mind: just right.
“Just right—not too much, not too little. Whether it's mixing a cocktail or making a cup of coffee, being able to get everything just right means you've done wonderfully. Right now, I feel that everything is just as it should be.”
