‼️ Whether or not Jacob Rees-Mogg is a “warmonger,” there’s an obvious reason for the establishment’s interest in foreign policy: “When you’re extremely wealthy and you sit at the top of society, it’s very easy to say, ‘Let’s look over there at Ukraine!’” “Meanwhile, the people in your country who weren’t born into extreme wealth—many of whom end up going into the military for economic reasons—are suffering, and they keep hearing these conversations about places on the other side of the world!” “This is why,” Glenn Greenwald says, “parties that hate the establishment, on both the left and the right, have been rising in so many countries around the world, because the establishment is filled with a bunch of coddled, very wealthy people who have contempt for their concerns!”

STRANGE BEDFELLOWS? Obama, Trump, and Brazil’s Lula all had (or have) the same problem: while each was elected by powerful anti-establishment forces, they all eventually became the establishment. The same story is true for any of the three men: “He offered an indictment of our political system—of the status quo—that really resonated with people and promised transformative change, and people believed it.” Even so, whatever “incremental changes” were made, “the old system continued.” Obama was absorbed by the Democrats, Trump by the Republicans.
