So helpful to keep this in mind 👩🏻‍🎓 – at Johannesburg, South Africa
A common source of disappointment is recency bias: weighing the last week more heavily than the last year. Zooming in on the immediate past magnifies slumps. Zooming out farther reveals upward slopes. Progress is rarely visible at a snapshot in time. It unfolds over a lifetime.

Too many people wait until they're exhausted or depressed to make change or seek help. Mental health isn't something to put on the back burner. We can't keep good habits in storage until we need them. Mental hygiene should be as ingrained in our daily routine as dental hygiene.

So interesting! – at Johannesburg, South Africa
Exercise can affect your unborn children's genes by altering the chemistry of DNA in sperm and egg cells. Aerobic exercise for 3 months altered sperm DNA by silencing genes linked to the risk of autism, OCD, Alzheimer’s, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and atherosclerosis.

Understanding the function of an entire genome is no easy task! Most genes likely have more than one function and behave differently depending on context.

Good for a laugh! We can all relate – at Johannesburg, South Africa
In academia, we are reluctant to share our mistakes. Let me start... -forgot to start the PCR machine -prepared an agarose gel without EtBr dye -mixed a protein ladder with samples & ran the western blot A few incredible things I did 🤣🤣 🤦‍♂️, what about you? @AcademicChatter

While it's clear how beneficial genetic screening can be for people and public health overall, scholars have long debated whether screening and sequencing technologies can, in some cases, stigmatize disability and support unethical and unscientific ideologies. (Thread)

Wise words – at Johannesburg, South Africa
The true leader in a group is rarely the person who talks the most. It's usually the person who listens best. Listening is more than hearing what’s said. It’s noticing and surfacing what isn’t said. Inviting dissenting views and amplifying quiet voices are acts of leadership.

Love this! – at Johannesburg, South Africa
People are happier to help than we expect. Data: we overestimate how inconvenienced they’ll feel—and underestimate how valued they’ll feel. Asking isn't always a burden. It's often an opportunity to help others feel capable and useful. Seeking help is an expression of trust.
