So I had I get home to take a picture before I drop my piece on this solar Vs Nepa brouhaha.
Anyone living in ekiti knows how bad electricity is here. Calling it terrible is an understatement.
Before I got my system set-up, my freezer hasn't worked long enough to make ice and I always pump water with my generator.
Before setting it up, I talked to a couple of solar guys and my demands were modest.
12 hour run time every day for my freezer.
2 standing fans.
Charging for multiple phones and an energy hungry laptop.
Lighting points.
My 55inch TV.
Occasional use of Blender and 1hp pumping machine.
Washing machine.
Energy efficient iron.
All the solar guys were giving me quotes of 3-5 million.
So I said fawk it and got to learning more about solar systems. I got to know the different kinds of systems, from 24v to 48v to 400v hybrid and non hybrid systems and different technology of batteries from lead acid to lithium.
One thing I realize is that a lot of people overspend on solar and I understand that it can be quite a tricky conversation because some solar installations are complex.
But what some installers do is daylight robbery.
I was able to get my setup for around 1.7m
4.2kva Inverter = 350k
4.2kwh Battery = 670k
650w JA panels x 4 = 520k
Wires and accessories = 140k
Installation = 110k
I got on jiji, talked to a couple of my friends who has installed solar systems and I was able to get contacts of trusted solar-inverter suppliers.
I was able to get the system done at cut price no solar guy would have given me.
With this, I've been living off the grid for the past 6 months and I'm not joking.
I've not used a single watt from phcn since June.
I run my freezer for 10-12hrs everyday.
I run my fans nonstop.
TV time is nonstop.
I charge and use my laptop anytime.
During the day, I can game, pump water in the afternoon, turn on the freezer and run the washing machine at the same time.
From 10am to around 5pm most days, my loads are supplied directly from solar and the system doesn't touch the batteries.
But this system isn't unbeatable.
I don't abuse it at night. I don't game at night or run freezer past 7pm and I don't pump at night.
I'll take this anyday over one useless nepa that you can never predict when it'll come.
The reason why I'm passionate about solar is because I see a lot of people get scammed by solar installer guys.
A friend of mine who runs a frozen foods business was scammed by a solar guy.
He got a system for around 3.5m. They got him 12 pieces of bad 600w panels, gave him 6 lead acid batteries and one useless 6kva inverter.
He enjoyed it for 4 months and then the system started giving him problems.
I was able to get him a better system for his needs by swapping the batteries for a 5kwh lithium and getting 6 good Canadian 600w panels. He didn't spend up to 1.8m and now his solar never goes off.
I've seen this over and over.
Yes solar is not perfect, but all I say is before you start bashing that solar can't solve your problem, make sure that your solar is actually your money's worth.
I see many solar guys making adverts of system of 7 million and the true worth is less than 4 million.
And that's the catch. It doesn't matter how much you spent on a system, what matters is the actual capacity of that system.
That's all I have to say.
You can do away now.

But let's keep playing the long 'election' game like we don't know the outcome.
It all relies on Nigerians staying power on the streets to SAY ENOUGH!
