FRIEND: "All right, the crowd at this party's pretty anti-gun and they ain't so hot on cops. So don't, like, OPEN with the fact that you work in gun media and were a deputy sheriff, okay?" ME AFTER 40 MINUTES, 11 BEERS AND NO APPETIZERS: youtu.be/m0UtTxagCrI?t=2

This is the correct filter for all "cases I read about." (And yes, I meant to type "as apocryphal AS 'they found officers dead with brass in their pockets.'" I don't always get to do this from a desktop, and I don't get to run these by Copy Chief Carla before posting.)

Could be as apocryphal "they found officers dead with brass in their pockets," could be as real as our UPS guy who got shot in the ankle on a moose hunt by someone who wasn't paying attention to what he was doing.

Terrible reminder that the whole "you're responsible for every round you fire" thing is real. We start new shooters up close, with appropriate firearms for their physicality and ability level, and pointed at an (actually effective) backstop for a reason.
One of the more interesting forensic, ballistics cases I read about was one in which a little old lady was watching a softball game, on a bright sunny day in her comfy little lawn chair and she fell over dead.

38 special out of a steel 357 magnum is soft shooting and tons of fun.

Since we're posting about Sir Patrick Stewart, I have a little story. In the middle-1990s, I was out of (my first enlistment) the Army and working as a second-shift security supervisor at a Connecticut whaling museum. Patrick Stewart was visiting for several days, researching his role as Ahab in an upcoming version of Moby Dick. Everyone had orders to leave him alone as he studied, and he had access to the museum that the general public did not. My security guys would check in on him occasionally, but we steered clear as much as possible, so he could do his research in peace. One of the guards had a very brief chat with him, and mentioned that his supervisor (me) was a fan. On his last day of research, Mr. Stewart knocked on the door of the security office. Nothing was wrong. He'd just heard that I was a fan and wanted to come thank me in person. He stayed and chatted with me for about ten minutes. We talked about Star Trek, of course, but also Excalibur and some of his other roles. We talked about his experience at the museum and how much he'd enjoyed it. He was very appreciative that we'd made sure no one interfered with his studies and thanked me repeatedly. He was an incredibly gracious, kind man of obviously enormous intelligence. I wonder how many stars - especially at the peak of their celebrity - would walk across a 17-acre museum, in the dark, to chat with a nobody for ten minutes. But Patrick Stewart did.

The thing about "beater guns" is that you use them to save wear and tear on your nice guns, but then all of your best memories end up being with your beater guns and you never build any real bond with your nice guns. [SEE ALSO: My garage-sale 870 Express I use for everything.]

Look, if you know your bar can hold about a thousand people, and if you know they're all gonna drink about a case apiece over those 6 or so hours, I don't see how you drop that ball.
