🥾 CAMBRIDGE IC ‘BIG WING’ – THE NORFOLK SORTIE 🎗️ This Saturday, the Cambridge IC ‘Big Wing’ is mounting an ambitious operation in aid of Finley’s Touch. There is, inevitably, some controversy over the plan. Critics have suggested that assembling a large ‘Big Wing’ before setting off may take rather too long, that we’ll arrive over the target late and that a smaller group could probably have been halfway to Hunstanton before we’ve even finished forming up. We reject these criticisms entirely. Mostly. 😬 Assuming we do eventually get airborne, our first objective involves the potentially hazardous business of crossing the border into Norfolk. The operation begins with a tour of the RAF Bircham Newton Heritage Centre, where we’ll explore the history of this important former RAF station before forming up for our 12-mile march to Hunstanton. And because simply walking 12 miles apparently isn’t enough, we’ll be conducting a little battlefield archaeology en route, looking for surviving evidence of Norfolk’s wartime defences — pillboxes, defensive positions and other traces of Britain’s preparations to resist invasion. The plan is therefore simple: Form up the Big Wing. Eventually. Cross into Norfolk. Inspect the defences. March 12 miles. Reach Hunstanton before nightfall. Find the pub. 🍺 Most importantly, we’re doing all of this to raise money for Finley’s Touch, which provides practical and emotional support to children with cancer and their families.
