On Oct. 15, the California Department of Education released updates for the California School Dashboard and the results of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) together for the first time. The Dashboard and CAASPP results paint a picture similar to the past several years: incremental progress and vast disparities between student groups. Much like the scores themselves, state leaders' reactions to the progress echoed those of prior years. Gov. Gavin Newsom painted a rosy view of these results in his statement, linking them to many of his flagship programs by saying, “This just in, test scores are up across the board in California for the third straight year.”
In a statement, CSBA CEO & Executive Director Vernon M. Billy shared how governance alignment and reciprocal accountability is needed to truly move the needle on student achievement. “With a new governor on the horizon, California has an extraordinary opportunity to replace fragmented initiatives with a unified strategy built around student achievement, operational effectiveness and reciprocal accountability,” Billy said. “We cannot be satisfied with simply launching more programs or celebrating marginal gains. We must embrace reciprocal accountability and continue to push for better results from the entire education system, including the state government itself.”

The older you get the more you realize that politics are psychology: the vast majority of people believe what they do as an extension of their ingrained personalities.
They don’t reason from first principles, or adjust policy based on data: they’re woke lefties or tradcons or AI doomers or accelerationists because the political shoe fits the mental foot. Few ever change sides, and if so only after contact with the results of their politics (and usually not even then).
Because to do so wouldn’t be updating an opinion, but changing their entire self, and nobody intentionally casts themselves into that confusing abyss.

Word of advice for younger readers coming from a place of love: when your parents get the most emotionally/irrationally angry at you, it’s usually because they see you mimicking some flaw they see in themselves that they swore they wouldn’t let show up in you.

It’s actually crazy how you grow up thinking home-cooked meals every day are just normal, then get older and realise how much time and effort it took your Mom to make that happen and how lucky you were to have that.
In response to the Oct. 15 release of California’s 2026 student assessment results, CSBA CEO & Executive Director Vernon M. Billy issued a statement calling for reciprocal accountability in improving student outcomes. Read it in full here: ow.ly/c4ws50ZYwFT

I made a tool where you can see where in the world has your favorite weather most often (it's the California coast).
You can also pick a given day of the year (like today, October 11), and see where on earth is most likely to have it.

Even though we're quickly moving towards a post-literate society, you can tell that books remain sacred objects that carry enormous power and authority in our culture based on how uncomfortable they make people who don't engage with them regularly

The perfect day to read this brilliant piece by @SLPrice about Aliquippa, the mill town in which Mike Ditka was forged and fights a never-ending battle to survive.
Near-impossible to find: Here's my SI piece on Aliquippa, the town that made Mike Ditka -- and vice-versa. Nothing I ever wrote was more satisfying. No citizens were ever more generous or honest about their pain and pride:
