Chancellor Samuels, who in his address had spoken eloquently of his personal experiences in the system and how they informed his pro-integration advocacy as a superintendent, seemed inexplicably caught off guard by nearly every question on integration posed by Hannah-Jones.

It soon became apparent that the highest ranking educator in our system was not prepared to share an integration plan or proposal, a timeline, a commitment to a plan, or a good explanation as to why none of these things yet exist.

four months of "investigation" by fellow cops is always, always, always meant to dissipate initial outrage so they can come to this foregone conclusion without open resistance
The fatal shooting of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley by a Mississippi police officer responding to a shoplifting call was a “justified” use of force, the state attorney general says. This statement follows a four-month review of the incident. An attorney for Wiley’s family disputes the conclusions and calls for the release of body camera footage. nbcnews.com/news/us-news/mis…

you can see from the comments how varied our teacher prep programs are & why so many new teachers struggle with even the basics of instruction. no we didn’t all have a practicum/field work, a year of student teaching, access to curriculum, or work that aligned theory& pedagogy
Every teacher prep program covers the basics of lesson planning. Teachers in training practice writing lesson plans way more elaborate than they will ever do once they're in the classroom. My question is do programs teach how to effectively implement those plans, and why not

I don’t think teacher prep programs show anyone how to actually develop curriculum. I made a lot of curriculum in grad school, but no one shows you how to use the table or fit things on a page for a worksheet with a graphic organizer on it.

They need to practice how to break down a simple process into somehow simpler steps How to rephrase a question they carefully crafted the night before that is just not making sense to someone When to grab counters, blocks, a whiteboard When to take a break When to start over

Most importantly, new teachers need to know how to both uphold and disregard the authority of the written plan- to understand that our planning is our preparation but our students guide our implementation, and we can't have one without the other 🗒️

On this day, we commemorate the October 17, 1961 demonstrations in Paris, when Algerians took to the streets to protest French colonial rule and demand independence, only to face a brutal crackdown by French police that left many dead, injured, and missing #Algeria
