October 28, 1944 — Eastern France Technician Fifth Grade James K. Okubo, medic with the 442nd RCT, crawled 150 yards under machine-gun and grenade fire near Biffontaine to treat 17 wounded men in one day. Staff Sergeant Lucian Adams of the 3rd Infantry Division charged alone through the Mortagne Forest near St. Die, killing nine Germans and eliminating three machine-gun nests in about 10 minutes to reopen a severed supply line. Two different kinds of courage on the same day. Both later received the Medal of Honor. Honor the ones who ran toward the fire.

On this day in 1944, Technical Sergeant Charles H. Coolidge of the 36th Infantry Division held Hill 623 near Belmont-sur-Buttant, France. For four days (Oct 24–27) he led a small machine-gun section and rifle platoon against a full German infantry company in cold rain and dense woods. On the 27th, with two tanks closing in, his bazooka jammed. He threw it aside, crawled forward with every grenade he could carry, and broke the assault. When withdrawal became necessary he was the last man off the position. His leadership earned the Medal of Honor. Coolidge survived the war and lived to 99. We remember.

On This Day — 23 October 1983 A suicide bomber drove a truck packed with ~12,000 lbs of explosives into the Marine Battalion Landing Team headquarters at Beirut International Airport. The building collapsed. 241 Americans were killed — 220 Marines, 18 Sailors, and 3 Soldiers. It was the deadliest single day for the Marine Corps since Iwo Jima. They were peacekeepers. They came in peace. We will never forget. Semper Fidelis.

October 22, 2002 On this day, bus driver Conrad Johnson, 35, was shot and killed while standing on the steps of his commuter bus in Aspen Hill, Maryland. He was the 10th and final victim of the Beltway Snipers. John Allen Muhammad and 17-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo had terrorized the D.C. area for three weeks with random long-range shootings that left 10 dead and 3 wounded. Two days later they were arrested at a Maryland rest stop in a modified blue Chevy Caprice. A dark chapter in American history.

In July 1944, an American Army dentist was treating wounded soldiers on Saipan when thousands of Japanese troops launched a desperate assault. As enemy soldiers entered his medical tent, he fought them off and ordered his patients to escape. Then he took over a machine gun and made his final stand. When American troops recovered his body, they reported finding 98 dead Japanese soldiers in front of his position. This is the story of Captain Ben L. Salomon..🧵1/6

October 22, 1968 On this day, Secretary of the Navy Paul R. Ignatius presented the Medal of Honor to the family of Private First Class Gary Wayne Martini, USMC, at Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. Martini, a rifleman with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, was killed on April 21, 1967, near Binh Son during Operation Union. When his platoon was pinned in the open by heavy enemy fire, he crawled forward under fire, attacked with grenades, then twice raced into the kill zone to drag wounded Marines to safety. Mortally wounded on the second rescue, he still pulled his last comrade far enough for others to recover him before he fell. He unhesitatingly gave his life so others would live. Semper Fi.

"Keep the Guns Hidden Until the Crisis Comes"
🚨 DSA Leader Says Keep the Guns Hidden Until the Crisis Comes Are the Democratic Socialists of America violent? It's a question that has sparked considerable debate, but one of the organization's national leaders argues that now is the time to prepare for the coming revolution. Christopher Winston, a national DSA leader with close ties to the organization's security apparatus, the Red Rabbits, isn't interested in armed activists showing off their guns in the streets. “Until there's a crisis, keep the fucking guns put up.” But he also warned that America is “rapidly approaching the crisis stage” and described the present as a time for “experimentation and accumulation of forces.” Pointing to the unrest in Minneapolis, Winston declared, “We literally had the embryo of a dual power,” referring to what he sees as the beginnings of an alternative power structure challenging capitalism. He urged others to learn from Minneapolis and the radical organizing networks established during 2020 that remained in place. Winston also invoked Maoist revolutionary movements in Peru and India, arguing that fellow travelers should study their experiences while developing a distinctly American revolutionary approach rather than simply copying tactics from abroad.

USCGC Munro (WMSL 755) is back home after a demanding Arctic patrol. The Alameda-based Legend-class National Security Cutter returned to Coast Guard Island on October 9 following a 112-day deployment covering more than 23,000 nautical miles across the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean. Operating under the Coast Guard Arctic District, Munro’s crew controlled, secured, and defended the nation’s northernmost maritime approaches. They monitored three Chinese-flagged research vessels under Operation Frontier Sentinel to ensure compliance with international law and assert U.S. sovereignty. The cutter also conducted joint exercises with the Royal Canadian Navy, including boarding operations, personnel transfers, and navigation exchanges, while supporting Operation Tundra Merlin alongside U.S. and Canadian forces to strengthen multi-domain homeland defense. Munro’s boarding teams enforced living marine resource regulations in the Bering Sea, protecting the roughly $6 billion Alaskan commercial fishery. Commissioned in 2017, the 418-foot cutter is named for Signalman 1st Class Douglas A. Munro, the only Coast Guardsman awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Guadalcanal in 1942, where he gave his life rescuing nearly 500 Marines under fire. “The Arctic is a demanding maritime environment that can test any crew and vessel,” said Capt. Adam J. Disque, Munro’s commanding officer. “We were proud to sustain U.S. presence in the region to safeguard our Arctic coastline and reinforce a rules-based order in the High North.” Semper Paratus. The Guardians continue to hold the line in the High North.

October 21, 1842 — Monterey “Oops” Marines and sailors from the USS United States and USS Cyane hit the beach at Monterey, California, seized the town, and raised the Stars and Stripes. Commodore Thomas ap Catesby Jones had gotten word that war with Mexico had already started. It hadn’t. They figured it out, lowered the flag, apologized, and sailed away. No shots fired. No lasting hard feelings. Early, enthusiastic, and slightly ahead of schedule. Classic. Semper Fi.

October 20, 1944 General Douglas MacArthur waded ashore at Red Beach on Leyte, fulfilling the promise he made in 1942 when he was ordered out of the Philippines: “I shall return.” Accompanied by Philippine President Sergio Osmeña, he stepped onto Philippine soil for the first time in more than two years as four divisions of the Sixth Army established a beachhead. Naval gunfire and carrier aircraft supported the largest amphibious assault yet in the Pacific. The landings opened the liberation of the Philippines and triggered the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval engagement in history.

October 20, 1922 U.S. Army Air Service Lt. Harold R. Harris was test-flying a Loening PW-2A over Dayton, Ohio when the wings tore apart. He bailed out at 2,500 feet, free-fell about 2,000 feet, pulled the ripcord, and landed in a backyard grape arbor. First life ever saved by a free-fall parachute in an actual emergency. Harris became the founding member of the Caterpillar Club. The silk canopy that saved him changed military aviation forever.

In 1945, an American Navy corpsman was treating a wounded Marine on Iwo Jima when a Japanese grenade landed beside them. He grabbed it and threw it back. Then another landed. And another. He threw back eight grenades while refusing to abandon the wounded man. When he reached for the ninth, it exploded in his hand. He was just 23 years old. This is the story of John Harlan Willis..🧵1/6

October 20, 1924 USS Trenton (CL-11) Norfolk area While preparing to fire trial shots from the forward twin 6-inch mount, powder charges ignited. Twenty men trapped. Ensign Henry Clay Drexler and Boatswain’s Mate First Class George Robert Cholister both jumped for the second charge and tried to get it into the immersion tank before it could explode. The charge detonated. Drexler was killed on the spot. Cholister was overcome by flame and gas and died the next day. Both received the Medal of Honor (posthumous) by special act of Congress. They ran into the fire to save the rest of the gun crew. Navy. Peacetime. Same standard.
