UPDATE: Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry confirms there have been six deaths from the flu among children and youth in BC this season. One was younger than five years old, three were between five and nine, and two adolescents were between 15 and 19 years old. #bcpoli
At least five children died in British Columbia from influenza last month alone, a rise that comes as an early season of respiratory illnesses adds strain to the beleaguered healthcare system. vancouver.citynews.ca/2022/1…
In case you're wondering how things are going in Vancouver politics, last night the school board voted to reinstate the school liason officer program and today at the budget meeting the mayor asked if libraries had considered generating their own revenue streams.

This is horrifying. The Iranian parliament votes overwhelmingly (227-63) to execute the 15,000 protesters they already arrested. These were peaceful protestors simply seeking the right to basic justice and autonomy. Unacceptable and barbaric. newsweek.com/iran-votes-exec…

I've written a series of @CityLab articles exploring why the US is uniquely terrible at road safety. Today I summarize what I’ve learned. TLDR: The soaring number of US crash deaths is due to policy choices, not “American exceptionalism.” 🧵 below bloomberg.com/news/features/…

I’m disappointed to hear the new Bike Valet is closing for the winter. One of the great benefits of living on the South Island is that winter biking is possible (and fun!). I’ll ask if there is any way (or $) to keep it open - if not, it must be open year-round next year! #yyj 🚵‍♀️

This is staggeringly irresponsible of @theresecoffey & will cause so much more harm than good. Doctors do not - unlike Coffey - dish out spare antibiotics to our family & friends because we’re painfully aware of the harms of antibiotic resistance. Utter recklessness. – at Wheatley, England

In the UK, in order to resolve the conflict between short term profit and climate change, we have decided to commit genocide on the future by embracing fracking ->

"I am forced to watch as you systematically destroy our chances of reaching the 1.5 degree target. Don't you understand the seriousness of this? People are dying. How can you continue to pretend that the climate crisis is not happening? How can you do this to us?"- @HedlundEira

Heavier cars are safer for their drivers, but far deadlier for everyone else. This paper find that for every 1,000 pounds a car weighs over a Toyota Corolla, the chance of killing another person goes up by 46%! Heavier vehicles lead to 28k more US deaths. doi.org/10.1093/restud/rdt03…

The @bcndp announced today its giving an additional $3.8 million to families who send their kids to private schools. I absolutely object to my tax dollars funding private schools. The public’s money should only fund public schools. @Dave_Eby #bced #bcpoli

In 1992, a 1-bedroom apartment in Victoria was $544. Today, a 1-bed goes for $2,058. People with disabilities receive a $375 shelter allowance today, barely more than $325 in 1992. Raise the shelter allowance. If rates kept pace with rent, it’d be $1,230.

With O’Reilly the problem is compounded by the fact that they no longer sell books directly to consumers. 😢 I suggest simply avoiding Amazon and going to your local bookshop. If the book is not in stock, they can order it from a reputable wholesaler so it’ll be genuine.
