The rhythm became the revelation, and every note told a story. Another extraordinary Sunday, around the way.

Born in Langa, Cape Town, in 1964, she would have been celebrating her 62nd birthday today. Her legacy continues to burn brightly through her timeless music, activism, and unapologetic spirit.

Bra Hugh Masekela received his first-ever South African Music Awards (SAMAs) in 2000. At the 6th annual SAMA ceremony, the legendary jazz trumpeter, composer, and anti-apartheid activist received a Lifetime Achievement Award alongside peers like Jonas Gwangwa and Caiphus Semenya.
Despite his massive global success and pioneering role in South African jazz, the SAMAs were established in 1995 while Masekela was settling back into the country after decades in exile. It took five years for the local music body to formally present him with this career-defining honour.
