Why the "Ownership Thesis" didn't quite work out. @jessewldn wrote a post that defined his fund, and captured the ethos that many early crypto products built towards. tldr: The next evolution of the internet is user ownership: giving the people who build, operate, and create value in networks a share of the economic upside, creating stronger incentives, alignment, and network effects. variant.fund/articles/the-ow… But that didn't quite work out the way most of us had hoped. "It worked in a much more narrow way than I had hoped." He expanded on why: "Ownership is very good at incentivizing quantitative contributions. Hashrates (BTC), Liquidity (DeFi). Makes it easy to measure and distribute ownership in a meritocratic way. The problem with other marketplaces, they couldn't figure out how to measure and reward contribution" I very much agree. He leaves us with a reason to believe that may change in the future. "Resource allocation in a decentralized setting is very messy because humans are in the way. I do wonder if, on a long timescale, ai has a role to play here" The whole convo with @nickgrossman is worth a watch.
Everything is getting more autonomous. Except us. When @jesseldn went out to raise his newest fund, he built the strategy around one word: autonomy. But getting there was a long and circuitous route. In 2016, @usv invested in Jesse’s company Mediachain. That’s given us the chance to work together for a decade, including his time at @a16zcrypto and now at @variantfund . The through line is a belief that technology should give people more control over their lives. In this week’s episode of The Slow Hunch, we trace that belief back to Jesse’s humble beginnings as an internet pirate and talk about what it will take for AI to fulfill that promise. Jesse is consistently one of the most cogent thinkers I get the chance to speak with, and I think you’ll enjoy our chat. 0:00 Preview 01:15 Variant's new thesis 02:20 Automation ≠ Autonomy 06:50 How piracy shaped Jesse's worldview 09:00 How the internet went from open to closed 15:45 How BTC inspired Jesse’s startup MediaChain 21:00 Why breaking the rules drives innovation 24:00 The Variant founding story 29:30 Why crypto's ownership thesis didn’t fully play out 34:00 Could AI agents deliver on crypto’s original promise? 37:00 Will AI become another walled garden? 39:00 “You can just do things” 46:15 Will AI give us more agency or take it away?

The last ~25 years "building a network" = signing up users for a software product The future is getting more owners of an asset

More than any time in my career, VCs seem to be underwriting other investors’ interest rather than the company itself.

I've been in the tech scene long enough to know that two opposite things can be true at once: 1. The rest of the world doesn't understand how quickly things are happening in tech. 2. The tech people don't understand how slowly things are happening in the rest of the world.

Apple has completely fumbled AI. And still might be best positioned to win it. Here’s how: - Fix Siri (please, for the love of god) - Enable generative UI in iMessage - Make AirPods the interface for your personal agent - Continue making exceptional hardware Intelligence is commoditizing. Distribution, trust, and hardware aren’t.

- siri needs to be more muse/instinct like. - imessage should basically enable this xitter.cf/rabi_guha/status/21107… - Airpods need 2 action buttons, and a camera.
Replying to @rabi_guha
Ask an agent to plan a trip to Kyoto, analyze churn, or compare products. Today it answers all three the same way: text With OpenUI, each answer becomes what the job needs. A map, a dashboard, a comparison, a form. Built from your product’s own components

The news feed is one of the defining products of the consumer internet. Generative AI is the next. The intersection of the two is the biggest opportunity in consumer today.

Was speaking with a friend who was trying to understand the strategy here. And subsequently found out that some folks aren't familiar with the idea of "commoditize the compliment" If that's you, here you go: gwern.net/complement
1/ muse spark open is the most capable US open-weight model to date. 816B total params, 42B active. 1M-token context. natively multimodal. built for coding and agentic work like long-horizon tasks, hard software engineering, multi-step reasoning. america! 🇺🇲

Software used to be something you bought to run your business. That era is over. Now the software and the business are the same thing. The companies that win this era will treat building the company and building the software as one and the same.

increasingly think the most interesting competitor(?) to a software company is a power user with strong opinions and AI... rebuilding what they use every day. keeping what they love, stripping out everything they don’t. this is coming for every category of software.

Dreaming is going mainstream 🫡 Honcho has been dreaming since last fall: while your agents are idle it merges duplicates, retires facts that changed, and reasons out the patterns no single session shows. Open source, and one memory across Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Hermes and more: go.honcho.dev/ueHAdhR
Introducing Dreaming: Across sessions, Devin builds a memory graph of how you like to work At night Devin self-improves its memory to remove stale records and discover latent information We are creating an OSS standard called Agent Memory Repo: cognition.com/agent-memory-r…

What if AI models have just reached commodity status? In early 2025, we debated whether labs would become the airlines of the AI industry : high cost, low margin businesses with undifferentiated products. What’s the strategy in this environment?
