3. 특히 미국에서 -ean, -ese라고 하면 국적보다는 본인 혹은 조상의 인종과 문화권을 뜻하기 때문에 인종-국적 표기가 많이 사용되는데 Korean-Korean이라 함은 이 공식을 그대로 한국 국적의 한국인에게 적용해서 나오는 괴상한 표현이기 때문에 Korean nationals, mainlanders 등이 더 자주 쓰임.

American-American과 British-British는 왜 안쓰냐는 분 계신데 여기서 첫 단어는 인종/문화를 말하고 둘째 단어는 거주지/국적을 의미합니다. White American, White British라는 말이 당연히 있죠.

그리고 원래 Korean-Korean이라는 표현은 영어로 대화할 때만 쓰이기 때문에 한국어로 “한국인”을 어떻게 정의하는지와는 완전 다른 이야기입니다. 사실 교포사회와 본국에 대한 대화를 영어로 할때 굉장히 자주 쓰이는 표현으로서 비하의 뜻은 내포하고 있지 않습니다.

딱히 대체할 말이 없기 때문. 그냥 Korean이라 쓰면 타국에 있는 한민족은 Korean이 아닌가라는 문제가 생김. 영어로 말하는데 Hangukin 이렇게 쓰는 것도 이상함. 동포와 구분하는 말이 필요한데 그냥 풀어서 Koreans in Korea나 생소해도 Mainland Korean 쓰는 방법도 있음.

마찬가지로 나는 한인 이민2세들이 “한”의 감정에 대해 구구절절 얘기할때마다 님이 그게 뭔지 알아? 하는 어깃장이 놓고싶었는데 따지고보면 뭐 나는 그게 뭔지 아나 싶고. 나라고 전쟁시대를 산것도 아니고말야.
